The new property blends modern luxury with Milan’s rich culture in the historic Palazzo Generali

Palma de Mallorca (Spain), December 14 – Meliá Hotels International, the largest hotel group in Spain and a global leader in the hospitality industry, announced today the opening of Palazzo Cordusio Gran Meliá. The flagship property is located in the heart of Palazzo Venezia, a popular square known for its rich history and iconic design in the center of Milan. The property’s ideal location, luxury amenities, and globally inspired dining concepts offer guests a city getaway and cultural immersion in Milan’s rich history.

Originally constructed as the Assicurazioni Generali headquarters between 1897 and 1901, Palazzo Venezia’s eclectic design sought inspiration from the world-renowned architect and historian, Luca Beltrami who played a pivotal role in the restoration of the area between the late 19th and early 20th century. The reopening of this historic building under Meliá Hotels International kickstarts the redevelopment of Piazza Cordusio, a square that connects the iconic Duomo to Sforzesco Castle, promising to celebrate the history of Milan while inviting international travelers to explore the destination as a cultural hub.

The renovation of this property was jointly managed by Generali Real Estate and Meliá Hotels International, with Studio Marco Piva guiding the design and artistic direction of the external facades, internal architecture and courtyard. To conserve the building’s original beauty, the grand staircase became the focal point of the restoration, with its marble walls and floors carefully preserved. The original Generali Assicurazioni emblems have been incorporated in the design, paying homage to the history of the building and original aesthetics of the era. The renovated property is now part of Assicurazioni Generali’s European real estate portfolio.

Along with the interior restoration, 84 luxury rooms and suites have been created, each characterized by grand windows and in some rooms, private balconies with warm natural lighting and unique views of Piazza Cordusio, Via Orefici, Via dei Mercanti and the Duomo. Studio Asah by Alvaro and Adriana Sans, Meliá Hotels International’s long-standing partner, led the interior design of the new rooms, suites, and communal areas, incorporating their signature contemporary style with Rubelli fabrics to pay homage to Generali’s Venetian roots, and other furnishings from some of Italy’s most iconic brands.

Palazzo Cordusio Gran Meliá, in partnership with Sunset Hospitality Group, a leading lifestyle hospitality group operating in 16 countries, brings renowned dining experiences to Milan. The hotel opening introduces four new homegrown concepts to Palazzo Venezia’s dining scene with Gioia Pasticceria, Giardino Cordusio, Isola Restaurant, and SACHI.

Gioia Pasticceria, created in collaboration with master baker Fabio Bertoni, offers authentic fresh pastries to be enjoyed with the hotel’s ground-floor views overlooking the Square.

Giardino Cordusio, an upscale champagne bar and lounge located in the hotel’s internal courtyard, was created with Giancarlo Mancino, an official partner of The World’s 50 Best Bars. The bar offers a curated cocktail menu featuring Giancarlo’s signature Martini “Altare” and Negroni Alfresco “Amphora,” among other specialty drinks.

Led by Chef Francesco Bagnato, Isola brings delicacies from the southern islands of Italy to Milan, offering Italian-favorite dishes and an extensive selection of wine pairings. The restaurant boasts a spacious terrace overlooking Palazzo della Ragione and Piazza Mercanti. The brand was recently recognized in the Michelin Guide and has an established global presence in Dubai, Bodrum, Marbella, and Morocco.

SACHI, a well-established culinary experience in London led by Chef Moon Kyung Soo, offers guests a journey through Japan’s diverse flavors, with local and seasonal ingredients at the forefront. The Japanese Kappo concept offers an Omakase counter and an expansive garden space overlooking the Duomo.

Guests at Palazzo Cordusio can also enjoy the hotel’s luxury wellness offerings, including an indoor swimming pool, sauna, Turkish bath, and relaxation lounge. The state-of-the-art gym features Technogym equipment and surrounding views of the Palazzo della Ragione and Piazza Mercanti.

Palazzo Cordusio marks the opening of the first Gran Meliá property in Milan, and second in Italy following the successful opening of Villa Agrippina in Rome. The property is a significant milestone for Meliá Hotels International’s portfolio of luxury properties in Italy, with a fifth hotel set to open in Milan by 2024, as part of The Meliá Collection.
