March 20--It's been a busy start to the year for Irvine-based Montage International's Pendry brand.
In January, Montage Hotels & Resorts unveiled a new parent company brand, Montage International, which encompasses Montage Hotels & Resorts, Pendry Hotels, Montage Residences and all other operations previously managed under the Montage Hotels & Resorts name.
The Pendry brand, which debuted in February in San Diego, is less expensive than the luxury Montage resorts but offers similar amenities.
For example: the Pendry San Diego has a "Superior King" room Monday, March 20 listed online for $275, plus $38 in tax and $25 in amenity fees. On the same night, the Montage Laguna Beach has an "Ocean Horizon King" room for $795, plus $38 in resort fees and $112.10 in estimated taxes.
The Pendry San Diego in the Gaslamp Quarter includes 317 rooms, six restaurants and bars, a spa and event spaces.
A second Pendry hotel, the Sagamore Pendry Baltimore hotel, opened Monday, March 20. The 128-room hotel has a whiskey bar, restaurant, outdoor pool and event spaces.
Ahead for Montage International is the SilverRock Resort which will break ground this summer in La Quinta in Riverside County.
The complex, with four types of hotel properties is anchored by an 18-hole golf course and a spa.
The project includes the Montage La Quinta, Montage Residences, Pendry La Quinta and the group's first Pendry Residences. The residences will be similar to Montage Residences.
The development, scheduled to open in 2019, will also have multiple restaurants and a conference facility.
Montage La Quinta will have 140 rooms. The Montage Residences will have will have 29 five- and four-bedroom residences. Pendry La Quinta will have 200 rooms. Pendry Residences will have 66 two and three bedroom residences.
Alan Reay, president of Irvine-based Atlas Hospitality Group, said a project of this scale would cost around $360 million, including the initial cost of land.
In the surrounding Riverside area, there are four hotels already under construction and nine other projects in planning.
"There are not a lot of markets that make sense to build a Montage Hotel (Laguna Beach, Beverly Hills, etc.), it is a very upscale, high-price resort and only works in a few high-end markets," Reay said. "Pendry, on the other hand, aims to give similar service as a Montage but at a more competitive price structure."
The move to have both Pendry and Montage in one project is not unexpected.
"A number of hotel companies are trying out dual branded hotels or dual brands adjacent to each other," Reay said. "They get the benefit of economies of scale and have the ability to offer different experiences to a wider audience of travelers."
