Aug. 01–FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Construction is underway on a set of hotels near The Lakes Mall.

Crews vacated the site for a brief period because they were pulled to other projects, said Fruitport Township Supervisor Heidi Tice.

"They're going to be back out pretty quick here," she said.

The Holiday Inn Express and Town Place Suites by Marriott at 1951 and 1989 E. Sternberg Road are on track to open during fall 2019. Construction is taking place concurrently.

The hotels are behind The Lakes Mall between Quarterline Road and a private drive east of Taco Bell on East Sternberg.

Owned by Farmington Hills-based Stellar Hospitality, the hotel plans received approval from the Fruitport Township Planning Commission on Sept. 19 and were given two years from that date to complete construction.

Site work, including demolishing two vacant homes, began shortly after approval, Tice said.

Each of the hotels near the mall will have about 100 rooms. They will face each other and have a shared parking area with a buffer to keep the brands somewhat separate, said Justin Longstreth, civil engineer on the project with Moore & Bruggink Inc. of Grand Rapids, previously.

Longstreth did not return a call for comment on this article.

Stellar Hospitality owns hotels throughout the state, including several brands: Holiday Inn, Double Tree by Hilton, Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Residence Inn by Marriott, Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott, SpringHill Suites by Marriott, Home 2 Suites by Hilton and more, according to its website.

The hotels are among a string of developments in the mall area, including the recently opened IHOP and Aldi locations.

In addition to The Lakes Mall, the hotels are near Meijer, Best Buy, Menards, Lakeshore Marketplace, Lakes Crossing Shopping Center, various restaurants and more.
