Hotel Online Special Report The Fenning Group Opens Retail Outlet for the Reselling of Liquidated Hotel FF&E May 3, 1999 – The Fenning Group, a Los Angeles-based hotel contracting and salvage operations company, has announced the opening of Hotel Surplus Outlet, a retail facility for warehousing and reselling surplus furnishings, fixtures and equipment from major hotel liquidations. While the outlet will specialize in volume resale to smaller hotels motels and resellers, it will also be open to the public.

The outlet is located at 3170 East Washington Boulevard in Los Angeles, the previous site of the salvage yard and showroom of Cleveland Wrecking Company a longtime major resource for salvage materials in Southern California. TFG head Donald Fenning was President of Cleveland Wrecking prior to founding his firm in 1998.

The warehouse site has a showroom, several storage buildings, and an open lot for trailer storage. Fenning says that his company needed a staging and storage facility to meet the need of hotels that are undertaking phased renovation programs. “We have now have a better set up to handle storage and resale activities. We can do a better job marketing our inventories in this fashion.”

According to Fenning, the Hotel Surplus Outlet is a natural extension of TFG’s hotel contracting and salvage business. “The tremendous competition in the hotel market generates a constant pressure on hotels to upgrade their properties and reflect the most current decorating trends. A large number of hotels are liquidating relatively recent furniture in great condition—creating wonderful opportunities to acquire fine furniture at bargain prices.” He adds that because hotel furniture is built to commercial construction standards, it features higher levels of quality, workmanship and durability than most typical home furnishings.

For example, the pressure to offer guests larger 25-inch and 27-inch television sets has forced luxury hotels to upsize their armoires. They sell the “too-small” armoires in bulk quantities to liquidators like Fenning. Likewise, the computer revolution has driven many hotels to provide larger workstation-type desks for business travelers. The traditional hotel desk sets they liquidate—many in almost new condition—are especially well-suited to homes, apartments and smaller hotel properties The outlet will consistently feature a broad variety of furniture, furnishings and other items from a wide range of hotels. The current inventory ranges from living room and bedroom furniture for apartments, condos and homes to restaurant chairs and a complete cappuccino cart. “Right now, we have a large inventory of furniture, including living room sets from a fine suite hotel,” says Fenning. “This allows us to offer high quality furnishings at very low prices.” One example, a five-piece bedroom suite from a major Southern California hotel, is priced at $119.95 for the set.

Hotel Surplus Outlet is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, call for hours. Appointments are available for the hotel trade and wholesale buyers.
