Survey: 74% of Hotels Will Lay Off More Employees Without Further Aid

AHLA | September 21, 2020

WASHINGTON (September 21, 2020) – As devastated industries wait for Congress to pass another round of COVID-19 recovery legislation, a new survey of American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) members shows that the hotel industry remains on the brink of collapse because of the pandemic. Results show 68 percent of hotels have less than half of their typical, pre-crisis staff working full time, and without further governmental assistance, 74 percent of respondents said they would be forced to lay off additional employees. AHLA conducted the survey of hotel industry owners, operators, and employees from September 14-16, 2020, with mor...

Study: 40% of Excess Unemployment Is in Leisure & Hospitality Sector

The U.S. Travel Association | August 12, 2020

WASHINGTON (August 12, 2020)—Faced with a fresh round of bleak employment data, the American travel industry is renewing its pleas for leaders in Washington to return to the negotiating table and finalize another coronavirus-related relief package—without which the prospects for an overall U.S. economic recovery look increasingly grim. A report prepared for the U.S. Travel Association by Tourism Economics finds a bevy of chilling jobs figures—and underscores the fact that an overall U.S. employment recovery will not be successful unless the hard-hit travel and tourism industry can be safely restarted: 40% of excess U.S. unemploy...

Four months into the crisis, only 37 percent of survey respondents report that they have been able to bring back at least half their full-time employees. To raise awareness for hotel industry priorities, AHLA is declaring Wednesday, Ju...

The Hotel Industry’s Post-COVID-19 Recovery Could Look Like This — or Not

HotStats | June 12, 2020

COVID-19 dealt the global hospitality industry a vicious blow. A Chuck Norris roundhouse kick combined with a Mike Tyson uppercut that left it immobile. The scores of hotel closures and staggering number of job losses are evidence of the pandemic’s pernicious impact on the industry. In the U.S., leisure an...
