STR | April 25, 2022
As 2022 moves further into spring and the summer months draw nearer, many markets around the world are seeing pent-up travel demand bolstering their hotel occupancy on the books. A good example can be found in Belfast, where the growing desire to travel and a variety of big-name events are leading to a positive performance outlook for hotels in Northern Ireland’s capital. This latest update from STR’s Forward STAR shows the many ups Belfast hoteliers can expect in the next year. May is busy with music When examining Belfast’s forward occupancy, we see how two world-renowned performers, each appealing to very different audienc...
India Hotel Occupancy and ADR Top Pre-Pandemic Levels in Mid-April
STR | April 25, 2022
LONDON—Amid continued recovery from the Omicron wave, India’s hotel industry eclipsed pre-pandemic comparables in occupancy and average daily rate (ADR) for three consecutive days during the second week of April, according to preliminary data from STR. The three days (16-18) were the first of 2022 with both occupancy and ADR above 2019 levels in India. When using a running 7-day average, occupancy and ADR have been above 90% of pre-pandemic comparables since late-March. On Monday, 18 April, India recorded its highest ADR index of the year at 106% of the 2019 comparable. Occupancy surpassed pre-pandemic levels earlier in the year, reac...
Local Market Growth: A Return to the Lost Skills of Filling a Hotel
Magnuson Hotels | April 1, 2022
April 1, 2022 – We have been trained in recent years to fear the word ‘artisan’. Hoisted over your favorite coffee house, bakery or even rug shop, it usually means that you’re about to pay significantly more than you would normally budget. But you feel good about it, because even if you secretly like instant coffee more, you’re supporting skills which otherwise might be lost. You feel that you’re making the world a better place. And the fact is that – coffee making aside – we are losing skills all the time. If we in the hotel sector were to look back into the not-too-distant past, we would find a whole set of abilities whi...
One Year On: Where Will Hotel Bookings Reset First?
Mike Ford | March 19, 2021
By Mike Ford Although at times it can feel longer, this week marks the one-year anniversary of when hotel bookings most steeply decelerated around the world, as countries closed borders and commercial travel was suspended. On the SiteMinder World Hotel Index, one look at the comparison to last year serves as a reminder of just how rapidly hotel booking momentum ground to a halt only 12 months ago. One year and some 400 million vaccines later, we're now able to reflect on the year that's been, and using the five stages of the hotel booking reset—domestic acceleration, plateauing, flux, embracing, and international acceleration—anal...
Autumn Offers Worth Driving For
Larry Mogelonsky | July 29, 2020
By Larry Mogelonsky, MBA, P. Eng. (www.hotelmogel.com) This is the summer for staycations. With group, convention and most corporate travel in stall mode due to COVID-19, you will need strong programs in place to motivate leisure guests from now-critical drive markets to continue to book with you through the autumn months. As part of this seismic shift in travel behavior, first consider the disruption to L2B timeframes. For the rest of summer, bookings at this point may mostly be last-minute as travelers hold out due to the vacillating news cycle on Covid numbers. Many rural resorts already have high occupancy and simply need a few nigh...

Changing the Rules of the Game for Hotel Bookings
October 20, 2017
By Giuliano Bianchi and Isabella Blengini Last month the Swiss Parliament ratified a decision to allow Swiss hotels operating on booking.com to offer rooms at lower prices directly to their customers. The digital platform opposed the decision, arguing that it would be the customers who would be hit hardest. Booking.com allows hotels to sell their rooms on the platform on a commission basis and customers have the convenience of being able to compare prices before booking a room. For hotels, the main advantage in using the site is that it can dramatically increase their visibility, so much so that some 72 percent of all hotel bookings in ...
Booking Misunderstandings: What it Might Create for a Guest
Ahmed Mahmoud | December 18, 2014
by Ahmed Mahmoud This is a true story by one guest about a problem with a hotel honoring a room price. Through the internet the guest tried to book three nights at XYZ hotel, but for some reason the site wouldn't accept his dates. So he phoned the hotel's toll-free number, and was offered a rate of 180 US$ per night. The case was, they never asked him how many people were staying in the room. The hotel e-mailed him a confirmation and he prepaid the entire three-night stay for the room by credit card. Then he realized that he needed to add another night to his stay for the night before the return flight, so he called back. He was told th...
