Opportunities for Tourism Due to Post-Pandemic Travel Triggers
Dr Cindy Heo | January 30, 2023
By Dr. Cindy Heo Insights from a recent research project that analyzes the post-pandemic emotional triggers behind making travel decisions. The findings highlight how people today are deciding to travel due to a desire to make human connections, find a sense of belonging, create lasting memories and undertake affordable sustainable actions. These new values of travel are opening up important opportunities for hoteliers and DMOs to create innovative and engaging offers based on quality rather than quantity of travel demand. In brief, new opportunities for tourism abound thanks to very personal, human triggers. Impact of Covid-19 on perso...
Tourism Outlook: A New Spring in Its Step?
STR | April 6, 2022
Global tourism receipts were well below the pre-pandemic level in 2021 as travel restrictions and uncertainty persisted, and changing consumer behavior dented economic recovery. But now, in the spring of 2022, some two years since COVID-19 forced governments to impose lockdowns and severe travel restrictions, there are plenty of signs of optimism for the future of tourism. This is true even with potential macroeconomic and geopolitical headwinds. STR has evaluated consumer views and behaviors throughout the pandemic, and our latest survey, conducted in February 2022, canvassed opinion from a global audience to gauge sentiment and the out...
Tourism Grows 4% in 2021 but Remains Far Below Pre-Pandemic Levels
UNWTO | January 18, 2022
Global tourism experienced a 4% upturn in 2021, compared to 2020 (415 million versus 400 million). However, international tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) were still 72% below the pre-pandemic year of 2019, according to preliminary estimates by UNWTO. This follows on from 2020, the worst year on record for tourism, when international arrivals decreased by 73%. The first 2022 issue of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer indicates that rising rates of vaccination, combined with easing of travel restrictions due to increased cross-border coordination and protocols, have all helped release pent up demand. International tourism rebounded ...
Global Tourism Sees Upturn in Q3 but Recovery Remains Fragile

According to the newest edition of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, international tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) increased by 58% in July-September 2021 compared to the same period of 2020. In August and September arrivals were at -63% compared to 2019, the best monthly results since the start of the pandemic. Between January and September 2021, worldwide international tourist arrivals stood at -20% compared to 2020, a clear improvement ov...
Will ‘Less Is More’ Become the Tourism Buzzword of 2022?
Gregg Rockett | October 15, 2021
Reflections on the post-pandemic approach to sustainable tourism By Gregg Rockett The unprecedented 18-month hiatus in the global tourism industry has been a unique opportunity for communities to assess the pros and cons of their current tourism strategy. Tourism receipts evaporated, but so too did the throngs packing the streets and disrupting the lives of locals. The big-name ‘Bucket List’ destinations were given some rare peace and quiet and, maybe (hopefully), time to consider that enough is enough. Traveling in Portugal and Greece this summer, I witnessed first-hand the return of tourists to two of Europe’s most en...
Tourist Arrivals Down 87% in January 2021 as UNWTO Calls for Stronger Coordination to Restart Tourism
UNWTO | March 31, 2021
The devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global tourism has carried on into 2021, with new data showing an 87% fall in international tourist arrivals in January as compared to 2020. The outlook for the rest of the year remain cautious as the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) continues to call for stronger coordination on travel protocols between countries to ensure the safe restart of tourism and avoid another year of massive losses for the sector. Following a difficult end to 2020, global tourism suffered further setbacks in the beginning of the year as countries tightened travel restrictions in response to new virus outbreaks....
How COVID-19 Has Affected Intentions to Travel and Perceptions in Key Global Markets
STR | April 22, 2020
COVID-19’s impact on consumer opinion and behavior seemed to evolve daily throughout March, especially with the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring a global pandemic on the 11th. To understand the effects on sentiment and future international travel plans, STR captured the views of travelers across 4 key markets: the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Australia. These four English-speaking markets make up a significant portion of global tourism receipts—20% or US$338 billion. Given these countries’ importance in the global travel industry—collectively, they account for some 462 million consumers—we examined March 2020 reactions to the ...
COVID-19 Response: 96% of Global Destinations Impose Travel Restrictions, UNWTO Reports
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) | April 17, 2020
The scale of disruption caused by COVID-19 to global tourism is shown in a comprehensive new report on travel restrictions from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The landmark report, published at a time of unprecedented disruption for the sector, shows that almost all global destinations have imposed restrictions on travel since January 2020, including complete bans on all travel as they work to contain the pandemic. Over recent years, as the United Nations specialized agency for tourism, UNWTO has been regularly monitoring travel facilitation and observing a continuous trend towards more openness. COVID-19 has dramatically interrupt...
