Microtel, as its name would suggest, is a small- to medium-sized hotel but its growing, nationwide network of properties can no longer be considered “micro”.  Microtel has heavily influenced the Philippines’ hospitality industry. More than 13 years ago, Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham® pioneered the no-frills, great-value hotel concept in the Philippines that has successfully targeted the mid-market.  Its approach is back-to-basics and focuses on providing consistently clean, comfortable, safe and secure accommodations at remarkably reasonable rates.

Under the direction of its president, Jose Mari del Rosario, Microtel Philippines established hotels in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the 3 main island groups in the Philippines.

In the first quarter of 2014, two more hotels will open; one in South Forbes in Laguna, the other in UP Technohub in Quezon City.  Just last year, Microtel Acropolis ( in front of Eastwood commercial center) and Microtel GenSan (General Santos City, Tuna Capital of the Philippines and the second Microtel in Mindanao) also started welcoming an eager, and ever-increasing clientele.

Over the years, other, often larger players have entered the same space; their names are synonymous with the country’s heavy-weight real estate conglomerates.  These giants, who would have normally stayed within the bounds of their 4- and 5-star hotel empires began to take note of the burgeoning success of the “little hotel with a big brand”. Now, they, too are trying to launch their own versions of limited service hotels.  Del Rosario, the quintissential hotelier, is philosophical. He repeats Colton’s quotation:  “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”.

The Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham South Forbes will soon open in Metro Sta. Rosa, Laguna. It will have 61 guest rooms, with views of the Laguna Lake and the surrounding rolling countryside. This hotel sits next to a golf driving range and a community of pleasant residential developments, is easily accessible to nearby industrial parks like Laguna Techno Park and outlet shopping at Paseo de Sta. Rosa.  Apart from the proven comfort of its rooms, Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham South Forbes will offer its guests a restaurant and a function hall with a capacity of 100 to 130 persons.

This project is a joint-venture between real estate developer Cathay Land, Inc., headed by Jeffrey Ng (a hotel entrepreneur in his own right with a collection of premium resorts), and Microtel Development Corp.

Also opening will be Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham U.P. Technohub in Quezon City.  It will have 120 guest rooms that rise in a 6-storey block fronting Commonwealth Avenue. The rooms will overlook a triangular, expansive garden with the two remaining sides featuring the lobby and a restaurant with an al- fresco patio. Above the restaurant a function hall with a capacity of 200 to 230 persons and three function rooms with capacities of 30 to 40 persons each will serve the public. Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham U.P Technohub is part of the UP-Ayala  commercial development located within the sprawling University of the Philippines campus.  Another joint-venture, this time investors include Aviso Holdings and Footprints Investments along with Microtel Development.  Aviso, no stranger to hotels projects has its own properties in Davao City and the Ortigas business district in Metro Manila while Footprints would be better known as the owner of the venerable agricultural company Franklin Baker.

There are now 13 Microtel locations operating or under development in the Philippines and are strategically located at Acropolis QC, Baguio, Batangas, Boracay, Cabanatuan, Cavite, Davao, General Santos, Mall of Asia, Puerto Princesa, Tarlac and soon to open in U.P. Technohub QC and South Forbes, Metro Sta. Rosa.
