New Haven, CT - September 30, 2014 - The Connecticut Lodging Association (CLA) held their 110th Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on September 25th at the Madison Beach Hotel.  Governor Dannel Malloy served as keynote speaker and emphasized the critical role arts, culture and tourism play in Connecticut's economy.

During his introduction of Governor Malloy, CLA President Farouk Rajab of the Mystic Marriott recalled, "In September 2010, the Connecticut Lodging Association co-hosted a Gubernatorial Forum on Tourism at the Connecticut Convention Center.  At the forum, then candidate Dan Malloy committed $15 million to tourism marketing for the State of Connecticut.  When elected, he delivered on that promise.  He recognized the valuable role our industry could play in the state's recovery from the worst recession since The Depression."

In his keynote address, Governor Malloy stressed the importance of the hospitality industry to economic growth in Connecticut and noted some of the significant changes that have occurred with the new tourism marketing dollars.  After years with a single dollar for marketing, Connecticut was dropped from the map of New England by international marketers Discover New England, discontinued participation at domestic and international trade shows and halted almost all forms of advertising.  Now Connecticut is back on the map with a multimedia campaign promoting the assets of Connecticut as a great destination.

Stars of the Industry Awards

The CLA's "Stars of the Industry" awards were created to recognize outstanding achievements in Connecticut's Lodging community. Nominated by members of the CLA, the winners on the state level automatically compete at the national level in the American Hotel & Lodging Association's (AH&LA) "Stars of the Industry" awards competition.

"The awardees exemplify the dedicated, professional associates who perform superior customer service on a daily basis.' said Farouk Rajab.  "Whatever the situation, their primary goal is to provide the guest with the best possible experience.  We are delighted to give them the recognition they so richly deserve."
