In this age of higher expectations, tighter timetables and even tighter budgets, most purchasing companies are finding it progressively more difficult to find qualified employees, in order to purchase creatively, shop alternatives and get as much bang for their budget. In this session, moderated by Lois C. Gilbert of Martin B. Stringfellow Company, participants will learn how purchasing companies find, train and impart years of experience to new employees and how experienced designers and/or vendors deal with the problems of working with a person who is in the process of learning the ropes. Panelists include: Elisa Whaler of Bray Whaler, Inc., Steve Higgins of Higgins Purchasing Group, Douglas Parker of Leonard Parker Company and William Langmade of Purchasing Management International.

In the hospitality industry, color and design are vital elements that must have longevity whether the location is a traditional or theme hotel. The challenge facing the interior designer is how to make the design relevant, yet insure that the property will maintain an inviting, fresh and up-to-date look. The session will be moderated by George Scammell of Walt Disney World Company, and panel members will include Hydee Hirshmann of Creative Resources Associates, Karen Dardoff of Dardoff Design, Inc., Julia Roth of Julia Roth Design and Dan Nelson of Vision Design.

How can the inevitable problems and conflicts on any project be best resolved? How to avoid confrontation, keep the lines of communication open and utilize effective problem resolution for all involved? Michael P.  Haley of American of Martinsville, Heather Kovacs of Kovacs & Associates, Neil Locke of Neil Locke & Associates and Tanya Geller of Strategic Hotel Capital will discuss how all players can interact together as a team and how project politics can become a win-win situation for all involved.

Common Design Errors in Hotels 2000 Sunday, November 12, 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Some errors are mere nuisance, but others are of monumental scale and affect the long term operating cost of the hotel. Henry Wong of WGA Wong Gregersen Architects of Toronto, Canada, will act as chair and present a decade of research and survey data. Joining Wong will be Peter Schor of Dynamic Results, John Nicolls of Hyatt Hotels Corporation and Richard Martini of Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

Sophisticated travelers with discretionary income demand the ultimate experience when they vacation at a luxury hotel. However, true luxury in a hotel experience a combination of service and style that makes guests feel pampered is becoming increasingly difficult to find, and to define. Moderator Deborah Lloyd Forrest, Forrest Perkins, LLC, will oversee a discussion with panelists Atef Mankarios of Foresthills Hotels & Resorts, Kathleen Taylor of the Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts and Melissa Biggs Bradley of Town & Country magazine, who will offer their thoughts on what defines luxury today and how that definition continues to change and evolve.
