SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 11, 1999 - The Westin Hotel
in Tokyo, one of the most exclusive accommodations in the city, has launched
a new Web site (http:/www.westin.co.jp/3d/3d.html)
that includes an Interactive 3D walk-through, developed by Superscape's
Content Solutions Group using Superscape VRT(TM) authoring software.
Virtual humans (avatars) welcome visitors to the virtual Web Site in the roles of service express attendants. Sophisticated motion capture techniques have been used to add to the realism of the "virtual staff." After signing in at the virtual check-in desk, visitors can walk around the reception area, which has been designed to capture the richness and luxury of the real Westin Hotel. "Visitors exploring the Site have commented on the impressiveness of the 3D content. The Site is designed to provide potential guests with further information about our services and the location," according to Junko Abe of the Westin Tokyo's marketing department. "The use of Interactive 3D technology provides a unique way of allowing visitors to experience the ambiance of our reception and to gain a feeling for the hotel before they make their reservation." According to Abe, traffic on the site has increased 45% since Interactive 3D was added to the site on October 1, 1998. An average of 100,000 visitors comes to the site each week.
