New Outlook on Hotel Industry Presented;
Learning Put into Practice
Ithaca, NY April 16, 2001 Students at The Cornell Hotel School, the
worlds premier hospitality management institution, will take over the
schools Statler Hotel April 20-22, 2001, to host 200 top industry executives
for a thought - provoking, appetite-gratifying annual conference, known
as Hotel Ezra Cornell (HEC).
This years focus is on innovation and continuing education. HEC 2001
will feature interactive discussions about the future of hospitality in
an attempt to bridge the gap between the Hotel School students and the
attending executives. While previous HEC events have been dominated by
presentations by industry executives, this year, the students have developed
a participatory educational program.
As the industrys future leaders and trendsetters, the students will
have the opportunity to showcase their entrepreneurial talents and creative
thinking to their future employers through the following seminars and discussions:
-
Experience Innovations is an interactive forum
designed using The Experience Economy, written by Jim Gilmore and Joe Pine
as its foundation. Experience Innovations will challenge attendees
to question the hospitality industrys status quo and to participate
in an active discussion with industry panelists, HEC guests, faculty
and students. The panel of hospitality executives will include Barbara
Talbott, Executive Vice President, Strategic Marketing, Four Seasons; Drew
Nieporent, Owner, Myriad Restaurant Group; Rob Delamater, Vice President,
Creative Services, Joie de Vivre Hospitality; and Dave Hanlon, formerly
President, Rio Hotel/Suite, currently Hotel School Executive-in-Residence.
-
Environmental Practices and Management Tactics.
Hotel School juniors Walker Cummins and Phil Lunn will simulate a computer
program they designed to showcase environmentally healthy practices in
lodging, food and beverage, and human resources management.
-
The Annual Hotel School Student Research Competition.
Undergraduate and graduate students will present case studies to faculty
members and guests on the findings of research they have conducted on various
industry issues. Presentation topics include Personality and Societal
Influences on Consumer Rage and The Relationship Between Lodging
Property Returns and Other Asset Classes.
Along with the educational components of HEC, there will be culinary receptions
featuring noveau cuisine including a wine tasting, courtesy of New Yorks
Gramercy Tavern; Cirque du Panache; an opening cocktail reception with
performances by the Cornell University Juggling Club; Serenity, an afternoon
tea featuring Asian cuisine; and Gala at Chatau Blanc, a black-tie banquet.
The HEC weekend will kick off on Friday, April
20, with the traditional ribbon cutting at the entrance of the Statler
Hotel, where Managing Director Jim Hisle will hand over the ceremonial
key to the Statler to HEC senior Scott Weisz, managing director of this
years HEC. From that point on, all hotel services and events will be under
the direction of more than 400 Cornell Hotel School students.
