Neil Locke Elected as First President for
International Society of Hospitality Purchasers
NEW YORK, N.Y., February 16, 2000The International Society of Hospitality Purchasers (ISHP) today announced that Neil Locke has been elected the organizations first president.

Locke is principal of Neil Locke & Associates, a Chicago-based purchasing company.
We have exceeded our initial goals and have met with enthusiastic response from the hotel and purchasing communities, Locke said.  We currently have more than 30 members with another 50 applications in the pipeline.  We expect to grow to more than 500 members within the next few years.

Locke said that ISHP has established eight working committees, which are focusing on creating common industry standards, fostering education and professional development, and establishing ethical guidelines.  We expect our first standards reports to be completed and presented at our next meeting in Las Vegas in April.

Other elected officers include: Executive Vice President, Alan Benjamin, managing partner of Benjamin West LLLP; Vice President, Membership, William Langmade, president of Purchasing Management International, and Secretary/Treasurer, David Shulman, vice president of Leonard Parker & Company.

ISHP, a non-profit organization, is composed of independent and corporate hospitality purchasing executives, who, as a group, spend approximately $3 billion annually in the hospitality industry.  ISHP members common goal is to enhance the professionalism of hospitality purchasing by establishing high standards in ethics, efficiency, etiquette and education.  ISHP also works with colleges and universities to establish appropriate courses and educational offerings.  In addition, the organization is involved in community service activities.

ISHP qualifications include five consecutive years of purchasing experience, or three consecutive years purchasing history with 15 years industry experience.  Independent purchasing agents must have served a minimum of five clients in the past year.
ISHP will hold its next general meeting at the Hospitality Design show in Las Vegas, in April.

ISHP has launched its website:
www/ishp.org

The new websites purpose is to be the hospitality industrys purchasing knowledge and reference resource.  The site currently includes a list of ISHP members and officers, an overview of the organization, membership qualifications and benefits.

We are in the process of creating standards directories, which currently are being developed by our committees, said Neil Locke, ISHP president.  Establishing a common set of standards for purchasers and suppliers will have a profound effect on our industry.  With hundreds of thousands of items involved in the building and maintenance of a hotel, it will take time to finalize standards, which will continually change as new categories are defined and refined.  The net effect will be a more streamlined purchasing process that benefits all parties.
