Union Organizer Planning Appeal Over Rejection of Rivers Casino Vote

The Pittsburgh Tribune-ReviewMcClatchy-Tribune Regional News

Nov. 11, 2009--A union organizer for the International Union, Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America said Tuesday that he plans to file an objection with the National Labor Relations Board about the rejection of union representation by workers at Rivers Casino on the North Shore.

"We will be filing an objection based on management misconduct of threatening them with a loss of wages and benefits. They told them they wouldn't bargain with them unless it was to bargain away things they already have," said Steve Maritas, organizing director of the SPFPA.

Rivers issued a statement saying: "Our management at no time would condone any behavior that might intrude upon workers' rights. Monday's election was conducted by secret ballot under the careful, on-site supervision of the NLRB. Employees voted, made their choice, and we accept their decision."
