New York City - October 2, 2001 The 770-room Crowne Plaza Manhattan Hotel, located in Times Square at Broadway between 48th and 49th, reaches out to victims, the relatives of victims, displaced persons and the rescue/recovery effort.

A special room rate of $140, in effect at least through December 31, has been designated for relatives of victims, people who have been displaced from their lower Manhattan homes and rescue workers.  This rate includes complimentary laundry service. Free Internet access has been set up in the lobby for guests who need to email loved ones and to search for missing persons on specially designated Internet sites.  A bottomless pot of coffee is on 24-hours a day in the lobby.

rooms for changing and sleeping purposes for field support personnel.  The hotel has extended complimentary rooms to the NYPD as well as the Chesapeake, Virginia firefighters who have traveled to New York to aid in the effort.  The police officers are using the rooms to shower, change, sleep and return to the recovery site.  These police officers are working around the clock, said Kate Simpson, executive assistant manager of the Crowne Plaza Manhattan.  They are coming in covered with ash and we are washing their uniforms for them while they shower before they go back out, she added.  The Crowne Plaza Manhattan is one of the hotels closest to the Jacob Javits Center, a staging area.

We have also tightened security to give our guests a greater sense of comfort, said Tom Snell, director of safety and security.  No one is allowed up to the lobby, located on the second floor, without showing a room key or a photo i.d.

To aid its neighbor, Ladder Co. No. 4 on West 48th Street, which lost many firemen in Tuesdays tragedy, the hotel has been donating food and the employees have just established a donation fund that the company will match.

For displaced firms, the Crown Plaza Manhattan will turn guestroom floors into temporary offices with dataports and other office needs to help keep businesses open.

Our 450 employees have been outstanding during this tragic time, said Simpson.  Many have donated blood and walked over 60 blocks to get to work.  Others have slept at the hotel, bunking four to a room, to make sure they can work the next day, and everyone has pitched in working double or triple shifts, added Simpson.  We had sales managers washing dishes.  Everyone is pitching in to keep the hotel fully serviced.
