Vector Investments Moving Forward with the
$150M Castillo Grand in Fort Lauderdale
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Jan. 20, 2000--Fort Lauderdale City Commissioners approved plans for Castillo Grand, the first 5-star designated luxury hotel and residences to be developed in Broward County. The $150M property will be located on the oceanfront at State Road A1A and Castillo Street in Fort Lauderdale.

The hotel and residences will offer the ultimate in services and features, according to John McDonald, managing partner of Vector Investments, developers of the property. The innovative design has been created by Arquitectonica, renowned international architectural firm based in Miami and New York. EDSA, Fort Lauderdale-based landscaping architects, will be responsible for the extensive land and seascaping.

McDonald said the care and consideration given to both the exterior and interior will make Castillo Grand a signature building representing Fort Lauderdales beach as a destination resort.

With wide sweeping terraces and balconies, the tiered building with its undulating glass and stone exterior is set on a podium with lushly landscaped and recreational areas on the sundeck holding a large infinity pool complete with pool bar, cabanas and other amenities. There are 270 guest rooms and suites with an additional 46 pied-a-terres, sky villas and penthouse residences in the tower.

Owners can access all of the hotels amenities including 24 hour room service, transportation and car maintenance, spa, personal and housekeeping services. McDonald said there would be a marina for yachts and marine services nearby.

The hotel which has 23 floors will feature a five-star ocean-fronting gourmet restaurant, informal cafe, bar and lounges along with a 16,000 sq. foot two-story European-style contemporary spa with complete facilities for men and women. What will be very welcome in this resort and business destination city, are complete conference and business facilities including a 12,000 sq. foot ballroom and related pre-functional flexible space, commented tourism officials.

Although the city offers the best in dining, shopping and entertainment, the ability to attract and maintain the luxury-minded visitor, whether business or leisure, has not been available. The hotel and residences are committed to a total guest experience from being welcomed by the doorman, car valet and bellman by name to the valet and housekeeping services on each floor, McDonald explained.

Our professionally trained and accredited concierge can arrange for everything for our guests and residents from beach activities and baby-sitting to tennis, tickets and travel arrangements. We will have hosts and hostesses with expertise in several languages to serve as interpreters as the resort will appeal to an international marketplace.

McDonald said the response to the 46 residences has been overwhelming and reservations have been closed until contracts are fully committed. The prices for the residences will range from $600 to $1000 per square foot. The two-story penthouse will have 10,000 square feet and feature an additional 8,000 square feet of balconies and terraces overlooking the ocean and Intracoastal Waterway.

The residential tower will have its own private entrance, elevators, doorman and service personnel including a service elevator with private access to the hotel. European wood custom kitchens and bathrooms, marble floors, top of the line appliances, oversized closets and private balconies are included in the residences features.

We are expanding the economic picture of the area - city, county and state with more than 300 construction jobs anticipated during the next two years and approximately 357 resort employees on a permanent basis. In addition, during the first five years anywhere from $9M through $11M will be produced in direct economic impact benefits.

This does not include the multiplier affect due to the tourist dollars spent in Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding area, which can double or triple these figures, McDonald noted.

According to hospitality investment professionals, there are few developments that generate more dollars in a local economy than a luxury hotel, particularly of this stature. Construction is anticipated later this year with occupancy planned for summer, 2002.

The architectural features for
Castillo Grand are as follows:
  • Castillo Grand is designed to take full advantage of its unique location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal. From sunrise to sunset the terraces that wrap around the entire tower provide views for the residents as well as continuous architectural bands of glass and stone that create a 360 degree building.
  • A curving colonnade faces the beach along the Beach Boulevard sidewalk and is punctuated by the grand entrance stair to the verandahs and hotel.
  • White sail-like awnings provide shade to the cafe and lounge tables on the verandah which overlooks the Beach Boulevard sidewalk.
  • A sinuous terrace which echoes the curves of the wave wall along the beach opens out from the restaurant and meeting rooms above the verandah.
  • The ballroom level has a curving glass facade with balconies overlooking the ocean view.
  • The landscaped pool deck provides a relaxed and natural environment above the activity at street level with lush landscaping, a large pool with infinity edge, a pool-side grille and whirlpool spas interspersed amongst the landscaping.
  • Access to the beach from the landscaped pool deck and from the sidewalk is provided by an elevator to the public skywalk over Beach Boulevard.
  • The tower of hotel and residential levels is a series of undulating terraces, stepping up to the sky in bands of natural stone, nautical cool whites and aqua glass, punctuated by lush landscaping.
  • The castle-like screening around the mechanical functions on the roof sits atop the stepped terraces as a landmark to the prominent location of Castillo Grand at Castillo Street and the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Landscaping is fully integrated with the architecture with plantings not only at the ground, pool deck and terrace levels, but also in the elevations of the podium and tower, creating a relaxed and lush aesthetic for the beach resort.
  • Landscaping at the podium level has been designed to be both an aesthetic and practical feature especially where plantings have been incorporated into the elevations of the parking garage. Here they enliven the north and west elevations as well as mask the lights and sounds of the cars.
  • The lobby has been designed to open up to both the Beach Boulevard pedestrian entrance and the Castillo Street entrance where the vehicular drop-off is located. Twenty foot high ceilings bring spacious feeling of the beach side verandah inside and then gradually step down as visitors walk further into the lobby.
  • The finishes for the interiors will reflect the informal yet elegant materials and palette of the exterior, with natural sand stones, cool whites and glass.
  • The hotel functions include a cafe and lobby lounge which have outdoor seating on the ground floor terrace, a gourmet restaurant and meeting rooms which open up to an outdoor terrace and a large ballroom and prefunction area that has balconies overlooking the ocean. All of these facilities serve the hotel as well as being available for the residents of Fort Lauderdale.
  • A 12,000 square foot spa is located at the same level as the landscaped pool deck and features its own landscaped terrace that has a relaxing whirlpool spa and meditative and exercise area overlooking the Intracoastal.
