ATLANTA July 12, 1999 In an effort to conserve water,
detergent and energy in its laundry operations while raising funds for
needy children, North Georgia State Park Lodges & Conference Centers
have joined the Project Planet/Childreach environmental program.
Participating properties managed by Amfac Parks & Resorts are
Amicalola Falls, Red Top Mountain and Unicoi State Park Lodges & Conference
Centers. The program encourages guests to reuse their linens and
towels rather than automatically changing them out every day. Participating
hotels purchase materials such as table brochures, door hangers, posters
and wall stickers. The materials are displayed in guest rooms to explain
to guests the benefits of the program and how to participate.

Guests are certainly welcome to have fresh linens
and towels every day they paid for the privilege, after all, said Denise
Munderloh, Amfac Parks & Resorts general manager of Amicalola Falls
State Park Lodge & Conference Center. On the other hand, most people
dont change out their towels every day at home, and they are pleased to
be able to do their part for the environment and for a good cause. |
The three properties instituted the program in January 1999. Munderloh
estimates 90 percent of Amicalola Falls guests participate. In addition,
managers and employees have become more aware of what they can accomplish,
and new programs for recycling are being attempted as a result. Although
she does not have a specific figure, Munderloh believes the program has
more than paid for itself and has saved the lodge and conference center
labor, electricity and detergent costs.
The funds generated by participants purchasing the materials go to production
costs and to benefit children in more than 40 countries by providing clean
drinking water, latrines and sewage systems, immunizations, nutrition supplements,
medical and dental care, access to education and more.
