Historic Atlanta American Hotel Receives $25 Million Renovation and New Name: Wyndham Atlanta

DALLAS - May 25, 1999--Wyndham Hotels Resorts, a division of Wyndham International, Inc., is in the final stages of renovating the former historic Atlanta American Hotel in downtown Atlanta. After closing for an extensive $25 million renovation to transform the hotel into a four-star property, the hotel will reopen in June 1999 and be known as the Wyndham Atlanta.

"This property is ideally situated in downtown Atlanta, an area in which the upscale lodging market is thriving," said Les Bentley, president of the Wyndham Hotel Group. "Our hotel will be the only medium-sized, upscale hotel in the area and as such, will offer a more personal environment for business travelers and smaller groups than the nearby upscale convention hotels."

The 312-room Wyndham Atlanta is owned by the combined ownership of Patriot American Hospitality Partnership, L.P. and Atlanta Americana Motor Hotel Corporation. The hotel will be managed by Wyndham Management Corporation, a subsidiary of Wyndham International, Inc.

"This downtown Atlanta hotel meets important strategic objectives for Wyndham as we continue our expansion into major metropolitan cities," said James D. Carreker, chairman and CEO of Wyndham International, Inc. and CEO of Patriot American Hospitality, Inc. "By third quarter 1999, Wyndham will have also opened key downtown, flagship hotels in Chicago and Boston."

"Wyndham is already well established in the Atlanta market, and to add such a dynamic downtown hotel is critical to our efforts to raise the visibility of our upscale brand nationwide," he said.

Wyndham Atlanta enjoys an outstanding location on International Boulevard, the primary convention and tourism thoroughfare in downtown Atlanta that was refurbished for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. The hotel is within several blocks of the Atlanta Market Center, Centennial Olympic Park, Georgia World Congress Center and Peachtree Center, the most lucrative concentration of office, retail, hotel and restaurant facilities in downtown Atlanta.

Renovations have been made to both the exterior and interior of the hotel, and include the expansion of meeting space to 14,000 sq. ft., the addition of a health club and swimming pool, the redesign of the dining areas into a full-service, high-quality 150-seat restaurant, and underground parking.

A distinctive feature of Wyndham Atlanta is "Caliterra," Wyndham's new restaurant concept that features a harmonious blend of two great culinary heritages rich in delicious history and diversity centered around the wine country of Northern California and Tuscany, Italy (Cal-Ital Cuisine).

The Atlanta American Hotel originally opened in June 1962 as Atlanta's first integrated hotel before the passage of the Civil Rights Act which prohibited hotels from segregating guests. It was Atlanta's first new luxury hotel downtown in over 40 years. Notable guests over the years have included Pres. Richard Nixon, Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, Martin Luther King, Jr., Elvis, Pearl Bailey, Carol Channing, James Brown and Anthony Quinn.

Wyndham Atlanta is Wyndham's first hotel in downtown Atlanta and eighth hotel in the Atlanta area, including the 250-room Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center; the 221-room Wyndham Garden Hotel - Buckhead; the 131-room Wyndham Garden Hotel - Atlanta-Gwinnett; the 191-room Wyndham Garden Hotel - Midtown Atlanta; the 131-room Wyndham Garden Hotel - Atlanta-Northlake; the 218-room Wyndham Garden Hotel - Atlanta-Northwest; the 143-room Wyndham Garden Hotel - Atlanta-Perimeter Center; and, the 159-room Wyndham Garden Hotel - Vinings.
