"This is a whole new bailgame in the point-of-sale world," said Bill Grant, Ibertech's director of corporate sales. "We're changing how customers operate a professional sports arena, theme park, casino, or other multi-site, multi-concept operations. ARENA enables our customers to improve the way they manage their businesses."
System redundancy was already established in Aloha, so live data feed functionality was the core development piece of ARENA, said Grant. The architecture can maintain live data feed functionality among a variety of relational databases. This means that customers are provided real-time updating and posting capabilities to the database of their choice, allowing them to use the reporting tool that best fits their organizational needs. Whether running Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, or other ODBC-compliant databases, ARENA provides reporting power and flexibility without the throughput bottleneck that can slow down today's client-server based P0S applications. In the event of file server or network failure, the redundancy of ARENA ensures that the ability to sell doesn't falter, virtually eliminating the threat of downtime, explained Grant.
The key to ARENA is the separation of the transactions from the database table updates, said Brian Cook, Ibertech's chief technical officer. "Even if the server should temporarily go down, employees retain the ability to complete sales. This is excellent news for multi-site, multi-concept operations since they no longer have to depend on their networks to ensure transaction processing."
The real-time reporting and "mid-event" information provided by Aloha allows management to be proactive rather than reactive, making sound business and staffing decisions as they go, said Grant. No longer must operators wait to analyze the present day's business on the next day's reports to see which items were out of stock, or which location made the least amount of money.
The development of ARENA allows a wide variety of new customers to implement point-of-sale technology where they couldn't before. "The ARENA platform bodes extremely well for the future," Grant said. "It's amazing when you think of what we'll be able to do soon in partnerships with our customers. They provide the ideas and the vehicle, and we provide the execution."
