Skin Care Concierges Protect Hotel Sunbathers - The Newest in Amenities?

Poolside massages and swim-up bars are the luxe amenities you’d expect from a swanky hotel, but a “skin care concierge” who tends to your UVB ray protection needs?

That’s the latest complimentary service offered by the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina, which came up with the somewhat offbeat idea during a brainstorming session among staffers about how to differentiate the hotel’s guest services from rival properties.

While the idea of a spa aesthetician slathering sunbathers with a combination moisturizer and SPF 17 skin block may seem a little, well, odd, guests are taking to the poolside amenity, says Carl Velleno, spa recreation and guest services director.

Fair-skinned or deeply bronzed, anyone lounging poolside is a natural target for the hotel’s Blue Marble spa skin care specialists who hope to guard against scorched skin.

It’s hard to know whether other San Diego hotels have adopted this amenity, but the Ritz Carlton in Miami Beach received a lot of publicity in recent years for its “tanning butler” who applies sunscreen and offers spritzes of Evian water for guests.
