News for the Hospitality Executive |
DALLAS (September 24, 2009) – Pegasus Solutions has issued The Pegasus View for August 2009 based on booking data from more than 90,000 hotels worldwide during the month. Available online, the report indicates alternative distribution system (ADS) bookings experienced the largest single month increase this year with a 12.67 percent jump. Additionally, the data evidences a third straight month of gains in North America up 16.48 percent for the month, ahead of other global regions. Data for August 2009, reported by Pegasus, the single largest global processor of hotel transactions through the four global distribution systems (GDSs) and ADSs, includes an extended view of business on the books through December 2009. According to Mike Kistner, CEO of Pegasus Solutions, the information collectively paints a slightly more optimistic picture one year following the global financial crisis. “As the global economy shows some signs of recovery, it’s encouraging that Pegasus can see light at the end of the tunnel for the hospitality industry, with certain areas showing decisive spikes. From our vantage point presented in The Pegasus View, we see enough improvement in the August figures to feel cautiously optimistic about an impending recovery,” said Kistner. However, the report still contains telltale signs of the downturn with August year-to-date (YTD) GDS reservations, which represent mostly corporate bookings, falling 7.5 percent and average daily rate (ADR) still down nearly 20 percent YTD. ADS reservations, which are predominantly leisure bookings, have grown for the year, especially with the August bump, but ADR still remains down 26.61 percent. Ric Leutwyler, chief marketing officer for Pegasus says the drop in ADR is continuing to be driven by extended shopping of rates and deals available. “Look-to-book ratios in August jumped from around 1,300 to 1 to over 1,750 to 1. The number of availability requests we processed through the Pegasus UltraSwitch also jumped 45.86 percent year-over-year, while we only saw net reservations increase 12 percent. Shoppers in both the GDS and ADS are still looking for deals, and are waiting longer than ever to book until they find the right one,” Leutwyler added.
