CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee, April 16, 2001 ... Benchmark Hospitality has
opened The Chattanogan, a new hotel and conference center located in the
heart of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The property opened three weeks
earlier than planned and $500,000 under the established budget of $43 million.
The Chattanoogan opened with a culinary
demonstration and celebration featuring the unique food and beverage concepts
developed with the assistance of Walter Staib, nationally renowned culinary
expert. The 202 guestroom property is expected to be the only full-service
hotel in eastern Tennessee to achieve AAAs Four-diamond status.
It serves as an anchor to Chattanoogas Southside development program,
part of the citys remarkably successful downtown revitalization effort.
The 210,000 square-foot, five-story hotel is designed to be an ideal destination
for business travelers, meetings and retreats, and leisure guests.
The award-winning design firm Looney & Associates of Dallas, Texas,
created sophisticated interiors for The Chattanoogan that reflect the citys
history and culture. Select indigenous materials were used in the
finishes. Native cherry wood, russet brick, wrought iron detailing,
Italian Limestone floors, and exceptional accessories were blended with
rich accent colors of amber, harvest green, chocolate, wine and spice.
A central feature is the hotels soaring lobby with a massive, see-through
fireplace connecting east and west sections. Specially commissioned original
art, created to capture the essence of Chattanooga, is positioned throughout
the hotel. Guestrooms are decorated in soft, neutral tones accented
with rich cherry wood. An oversized study desk, two-line telephones and
high-speed Internet access data ports are provided in each guestroom.
The Chattanoogan offers a health club and day spa with four treatment
rooms, a juice bar, pool, outdoor patio overlooking the courtyard, steam
room and sauna. Guestrooms feature views of downtown Chattanooga
and the picturesque Lookout Mountain. The property is located within walking
distance of the citys museums, galleries, retail stores, restaurants and
The Tennessee Aquarium.
The property offers state-of-the-art meeting facilities. The 25,000

Renowned
culinary expert Walter Staib designed restaurant concepts
The Chattanoogan serves some of the best cuisine in the region.
The hotel has assembled an impressive team of culinary experts for the
three restaurants, and utilized the services of renowned culinary consultant,
Walter Staib, to develop specialized concepts and menus. All
food, including desserts, breads, sauces and stocks, are prepared in the
hotels state-of-the-art kitchen using the freshest local ingredients available.
Fresh herbs grown in the hotels own herb garden.
The hotels restaurants include: The Broad Street Grille, a classic
steak and chop house that features an exhibition kitchen and grille; the
Foundry, a bistro and lounge with continuous dining and top-of-the-line
liquors, a comprehensive martini selection, and The Chattanoogans own
private label wine; and Strouds, a sidewalk espresso café, ideal
for the propertys downtown location.
One of the unique features of The Chattanoogan is its urban forest
courtyard entrance, a 70,000 square-foot space that includes almost 10,000
different plantings, with nine varieties of trees and 36 varieties of shrubs,
flowers and grasses. The area is situated along the downtown street edges
and serves as the propertys main entrance, providing hotel guests and
pedestrians with a beautiful park-like setting in the heart of the city.
When the urban forest is fully mature, a tree canopy will cover and shade
the courtyard. At the edge of the urban forest next to the hotel
are two terraces furnished with tables, chairs and park benches.
The terraces are designed with flowering trees and are surfaced with a
fine gravel, much like the historic city parks in Paris.
