By Caitlin Dineen, The Fayetteville Observer, N.C.McClatchy-Tribune Regional News May 21--The outbreak of salmonella infection reported at the Holiday Inn Bordeaux last week has affected 70 people, Cumberland County Department of Public Health officials said Monday. On Friday, health authorities reported that 51 people were having symptoms consistent with the food poisoning illness. As of Monday at 4 p.m., that number has increased. Of those affected, 58 are from North Carolina and 12 are from out of state. Five people have been hospitalized with the illness, officials said. Most people who contract the illness are typically sick for between four and seven days, and recover without medical treatment. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Health officials said the newest cases reported happened before May 14, indicating control measures enacted there appear effective. The outbreak was reported to have begun May 1. Since then, more than 1,000 people had eaten at the hotel's banquet facilities, the Cafe Bordeaux and the All American Sports Bar and Grill. The cause of the outbreak is still under investigation. Anyone who has consumed food or any beverages at the hotel since May 1 and had symptoms within three days of consumption should call the county's Health Department at 433-3638.
