UPDATED: TownePlace Suites opens in Aberdeen (American News, Aberdeen, S.D.)

By Jeff Natalie-Lees, American News, Aberdeen, S.D.McClatchy-Tribune Regional News

May 14--Aberdeen has added a new extended-stay hotel now that Towneplace Suites by Marriott is open for business.

The three-story brick structure, at 402 S. Norwood St. north of Lafayette Mall and west of Karl's TV and Appliance, opened Thursday. As of Monday, 50 of the 56 units were completely finished, while the other six lacked a few finishing touches, said Bryana Darling, general manager. Those should be ready soon, she said.

All rooms are equipped with a kitchen and living area. There are studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units available with cost determined based on length of stay.

"While obviously our guests can stay for one or two night, our specialty is more extended stays," said Darling. "That is why each room has a kitchen and we have laundry facilities on site."

The hotel's amenities include a swimming pool, 24-hour exercise room and free continental breakfast. The pool is expected to be open in seven to 10 days, said Paul Darling, of Americal, a hotel management group. The hotel is owned by an Aberdeen investor group and managed by Americal. Paul Darling is Bryana Darling's father.

Construction began one year ago, and the hotel opened on schedule. Huff Construction has been the general contractor.

"Our staff worked really hard to get the rooms ready for occupancy," Bryana Darling said.

Marriott management completed a walk through of the facility and said it was ready to accept guests, she said. A trainer from Marriott was in Aberdeen to work with staff on Sunday.

Guests occupied about five rooms over the weekend, she said.

In addition to serving individual and families, TownePlace Suites is looking to form relationships with companies that might need extended stays for their employees who are moving to Aberdeen but do not yet have a place to live. The companies also coulduse the hotel for visiting consultants or corporate staff, Bryana Darling said.

The hotel has 530 square feet of meeting space, free wireless Internet throughout the hotel and on-site business services.

TownePlace Suite staff can be reached at 605-725-3500.
