Broadmoor to discuss enhancements with nearby residents this month (The Gazette (Colorado Springs, Colo.))

April 23--The Broadmoor hotel, which has pumped more than $300 million into new construction and renovations over the last 15 years, will be updating nearby residents on its current $90 million in development plans, including a potential project to upgrade its historic east golf course.

Broadmoor President and CEO Steve Bartolin said on Monday that hotel representatives plan to brief neighbors at a meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. April 30 at the hotel's Broadmoor Hall.

An invitation sent to neighbors describes the east golf course as "an old course in need of upgrades so that the hotel can continue to attract prestigious, national and international tournaments that significantly contribute to the local economy."

The invitation also says the project includes an enhancement of the course "by redirecting the flow of vehicle traffic" in the area; no other details were given.

The Broadmoor, an internationally known hotel and resort, covers 3,000 acres on Colorado Springs' southwest side and is surrounded by several upscale neighborhoods.

At the April 30 meeting, Broadmoor representatives also will review hotel improvements that have been recently completed or are in the offing, including the expansion of the Golden Bee restaurant, the opening of the Play entertainment center and development of a pair of wilderness lodging projects.

Broadmoor officials will seek input on the plan during 6 to 8 p.m. neighborhood meetings May 7-8 at Colorado Hall and possibly June 4 and June 6 at Broadmoor Hall.

The east course was designed by world-renowned golf course architect Donald Ross at the request of Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose two years before the hotel opened in 1918. Among other prominent tournaments, The Broadmoor played host to the U.S. Women's Open in 1995 and 2011, and a men's U.S. Senior Open in 2008 -- events that pumped tens of millions of dollars into the economy.

The Broadmoor is owned by the Anschutz Corp., whose Clarity Media Group owns The Gazette.
