Sol Melia Increases its Ski Resort Portfolio with the
Melia Formigal in Huesca, Spain

September, 2000 - The hotel company Sol Meliá has taken another step towards the diversification of its hotel portfolio with the incorporation of the Meliá Formigal, the companys fifth ski resort property. The hotel is a first for the company in the Spanish province of Huesca. It is owned by the real estate company IZAS 2002 and will be managed by Sol Meliá. Located in the popular Spanish ski resort of Formigal, the hotel is scheduled to open in October 2002.

The Meliá Formigal will initially open with 135 rooms (possibility of later extension to 150) and more than 350 m2 of meeting space. The incorporation of the Meliá Formigal is another sign of the interest Sol Meliá has in establishing a presence in popular new tourism destinations, which the Pyrenees undoubtedly is, both to increase the diversification of its hotel portfolio and reduce seasonality in its business.

The Meliá Formigal will be an ideal choice for skiers in the Aragon Pyrenees in winter and for adventure sports enthusiasts for the rest of the year. The hotel has also been designed to appeal to those wishing to celebrate a business event in a truly incomparable setting.

Hotel facilities will provide the latest in comfort and technology, as well as an extensive range of services. The Meliá Formigal will provide two restaurants (one buffet and one à la carte), cafeteria, bar, fitness centre and social club, as well as an indoor car park for 90 vehicles and an outdoor car park for another 40. All guestrooms will provide satellite TV, minibar, room service and safe.

5 Ski Hotels after the Purchase of Tryp

After the purchase of the Tryp Hoteles chain by Sol Meliá, an operation announced in August, the company will now provide 5 ski resort properties. In addition to the Meliá Formigal, there are also two operating Sol Meliá hotels in the Sierra Nevada in Granada, the Meliá Sol y Nieve and the Meliá Sierra Nevada, and two Tryp hotels in Baqueira Beret in the Catalan Pyrenees, the Tryp Royal Tanau and the Tryp Blanheu Tanau apartments.

Huesca, an Undiscovered Paradise

Huesca, the most northerly province of Aragon, has a surface area of 15.671 Km2 and a population of almost 220,000. Its privileged geographical location and its excellent climate make Upper Aragon an extremely attractive destination.

Most of the population work in agriculture and farming, although the tourism industry is also increasing in importance. The wide range of tourism activities available include all types of snow and water-based sports, climbing, camping, trekking or rural tourism, as well as interesting artistic and cultural attractions.

Formigal, Skiing in Luxury

The Formigal ski resort is located in the heart of the Aragon Pyrenees, in the north of the Province of Huesca along the Tena Valley. The magnificent scenery of the Valley, the large surface area of skiable slopes and its excellent facilities makes it one of the finest ski resorts in the whole of Spain. The growth of Formigal over recent years has also given rise to a range of services and facilities for visitors in the Valley and surrounding villages.

One of the most attractive of the villages is Sallent de Gállego, set in beautiful scenery and home to the resort. The warmth of its people, the quality of its cuisine and its enchanting natural environment make it an idyllic destination.

Formigal provides skiing fans with 56 kilometres for skiing on 57 slopes (5 special, 4 green, 13 blue, 24 red and 11 black). Facilities are also in place for Alpine skiing, snowboarding and night skiing.

After the recent purchase of Tryp, Sol Meliá now provides more than 330 hotels in 30 countries.
