The Acapulco CVB Reports Hotel Occupancy
Up More than 4% Over Last Year

ACAPULCO, Mexico, Sept. 19, 2000 - The Acapulco Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACACVB) announced today that SECTUR confirmed Acapulco has experienced more growth than any other beach destination in Mexico over the past six monthsand the trend is expected to continue.  The ACACVB attributes the increase in hotel occupancy to added direct flights from cities throughout the U.S. and internationally, and to ongoing investments that provided for development of new hotels, attractions and upgrades to existing properties.

Says Ramon Lujan, General Director ACACVB, Hotel occupancy is up more than 4% from last year.  The lift factor, which designates the number of flights to Acapulco, has increased almost 7%.  These numbers reflect the nearly $2 billion in investments, from both SECTUR and private funding, as well as new direct flights to Acapulco.  Investment dollars and new flights reflect the fact that business travelers and tourists are happy with what they find hereand theres justification to give them more of the same.  Snowballing is not a word we use often in Acapulco, where the sun shines virtually every day, but thats precisely whats happening with our tourism.

There are more direct flights to Acapulco from U.S. cities this year than ever before.  Direct flights are available from New York, Newark, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix and Chicago. In July, AeroMexico inaugurated service to Acapulco from Tijuana and Monterrey, and in October will inaugurate a direct flight from Atlanta.  In May, AirTours inaugurated a flight from Manchester, England, and a contract has been signed to inaugurate direct service from London next year.  ACACVB is working with airlines worldwide to continue this process.

Ninety-percent of investment dollars will be used to develop luxury hotels and restaurants near the Princess Hotel, the Punta Diamante area and along Revolcadero Beach.  The ACACVB recently invested $100,000 towards restoration of the famed Fort San Diego museum.

It wasn't until the first roads from the capital opened in 1927, a trip that took more than a week, that enough hearty travelers braved it and to pompt the construction of the first hotel. Acapulco remained relatively tranquil until 1945, when a new hihgway opened that made the trip from Mexico City a mere six hours. Direct international air service began in 1964, and soon after, Acapulco staked its claim as the playground for Hollywood's elite, and the rich and famous from around the world. La gente bonita (the beautiful people) were dawn to Acapulco's dazzling beauty, climate and golden sand beaches, and suddenly, Acapulco became a magnate for international visitors and many celebrities who to this day own homes here.

Since then, many changes have occurred in Acapulco. This vivacious, cosmopolitan city is now home to nearly two million residents and has become the undisputed "Queen" of Mexican beach resort destinations.

A few years ago, ctiy fathers and the leaders of tourism embarked upon a multi-million dollar "Beautification Program". Efforts to rebuild and restore the city to its former magnificence include a city-wide clean up, attractive landscaping of public areas, improved roads, cleaner bays and beaches, new beach access streets and lighted bus stops. The colorful beach peddlers and street vendors have also been relocated to arts and crafts markets along the Costera. The result of this "mini-renaissance" is a new revitalized Acapulco -"hooter" and more effervescent than ever.
