HONOLULU, HAWAII�August 26, 1999 - The new management team
for OHANA Hotels of Hawaii, a new lodging brand launched by Outrigger Hotels
& Resorts dedicated to providing quality accommodations at moderate
prices, was recently announced by David Carey, president and CEO of Outrigger
Enterprises, Inc.
At the helm of OHANA Hotels is Thomas D. Burke, vice president of operations. He is responsible for the successful launch of the new brand and the strategic direction and operation of the 15 Waikiki hotels that comprise the OHANA group. Assisting Burke are two new directors of operation�Chuck Shishido and Robert �Mick� Minicola, who are further aided by two new operations managers�John Durham and Daryl Akiyoshi. Thomas D. Burke, CHA, Vice President, Operations Burke is a 32-year veteran of Outrigger Hotels & Resorts. He first joined the company in 1967 as a front desk clerk at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach. Within six months, he was promoted to assistant manager. Two years later, Burke was placed in charge of the Outrigger Coral Seas, Outrigger Reef Lanais and the Outrigger Edgewater. In 1972, Burke joined the opening team of the Outrigger East Hotel. During the next two years, he assisted in the opening of three other Outrigger properties. He was appointed general manager of the Outrigger West Hotel in 1975. Burke was promoted again in 1985 to vice president of operations for Outrigger Hotels & Resorts and since then has been responsible for the overall service standards and cost control of the hotels that now make up OHANA Hotels. Originally from Bozeman, Montana, Burke is a graduate of the University of Montana at Missoula. He discovered Hawaii�s sunshine, however, while attending the University of Hawaii during his freshman and sophomore years.. After graduation, Burke spent four and a half years as a special counter-espionage agent in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corp. On his return to Hawaii, he joined Outrigger Hotels & Resorts. Burke received his Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA) designation in 1988. Chuck Shishido, CHA, Director of Operations Chuck Shishido has been promoted to director of operations for OHANA Hotels and has overall responsibility for the successful operation of the group�s new Mauka Division of hotels, which includes the Waikiki West, Waikiki Malia, Ohana Surf, Waikiki Surf, Waikiki Surf East and the Maile Sky Court. He was most recently general manager of the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. While pursuing an accounting degree at the University of Hawaii, Shishido joined Outrigger Hotels in 1972 as a part-time worker in the housekeeping department at the Outrigger Reef Towers. Following graduation, he joined the Outrigger Reef on a full-time basis as a front desk agent. In 1975, Shishido was promoted to assistant hotel manager at the Outrigger Reef. One year later, he transferred to the Outrigger Reef Towers as hotel manager. For the next thirteen years, Shishido worked as hotel manager for six different Outrigger properties. He was promoted to Village Group manager in 1990 and was responsible for the Outrigger Village, Outrigger Coral Seas, Outrigger Royal Islander and Outrigger Reef Lanais. In 1994, he was appointed general manager of the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach and has remaineded there until his recent promotion to OHANA Hotels. Shishido earned his Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA) certification in 1991. He is currently a member of the Hawaii Hotel Association and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau. Robert �Mick� Minicola, CHA, Director of Operations Robert �Mick� Minicola has been promoted to director of operations for OHANA Hotels and has overall responsibility for the successful operation of the group�s new Makai Division, which includes the Waikiki Tower, Waikiki Reef Towers, Waikiki Reef Lanai, Waikiki Royal Islander, Waikiki Edgewater, Waikiki Village, Waikiki Coral Seas, Waikiki Hobron and Ala Moana Towers hotels. He was most recently group manager of the Outrigger Hobron, Outrigger Ala Wai Tower and Outrigger Maile Sky Court hotels. Minicola began his career with Outrigger Hotels in 1988 as front office
manager at the Outrigger Prince Kuhio. He was promoted to assistant general
manager for the hotel in 1989. Four years later, Minicola transferred to
the Outrigger Hobron as general manager. In 1997 he assumed responsibility
of the Outrigger Ala Wai Towers as well. Minicola was later appointed group
manager when he also assumed responsibility for the Outrigger Maile Sky
Court.
John Durham, CHA, Operations Manager Assisting Chuck Shishido with the Mauka Division of OHANA Hotels is John Durham, who has been appointed operations manager. Most recently, Durham was group manager for the Village and Tower Group of hotels for Outrigger Hotels. Durham began his career with Outrigger in 1988, and for the past 11 years has successfully managed the company�s Tower and Village Group of hotels. Prior to joining Outrigger, Durham held management positions at Hyatt Corporation, Amfac Hotels & Resorts and Mariner Corporation (Marriott, Holiday Inn and Hilton). Durham earned his B.S. degree from Cornell University in Hotel Administration in 1976. He is also a Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA). Daryl Akiyoshi, CRDE, Operations Manager Daryl Akiyoshi has been appointed operations manager for OHANA Hotels� Makai Division and is assisting Mick Minicola. Akiyoshi joined Outrigger Hotels in 1987 as a night auditor at the Outrigger Hobron. He was promoted to assistant manager in 1988 and within a year assumed the position of hotel manager. In 1989, Akiyoshi transferred to the Outrigger Maile Sky Court as hotel manager. He later moved to the Best Western Outrigger Waikiki Tower in the same position overseeing its $5 million property renovation. Akiyoshi returned to the Outrigger Maile Sky Court in 1996 as general manager and was subsequently appointed general manager of the Outrigger West in 1998, a position he has held until his recent promotion. Prior to joining Outrigger, Akiyoshi held management positions with Aston Hotels & Resorts and the Ala Moana Hotel. Akiyoshi earned his Certified Rooms Division Executive (CRDE) designation in November 1990. He has received numerous awards of excellence from Outrigger Hotels, including the company�s President�s Award in 1994, 1995 and 1997. He received the company�s Innovation Award in 1998 and its Ke �Ano Wa�a (The Outrigger Way) Ka �Ikena Award in 1995. Outrigger Hotels & Resorts recently introduced OHANA Hotels of Hawaii, a new lodging brand that emphasizes friendly, reliable service; comfortable and well-maintained hotel rooms; and a simplified approach to pricing. Fifteen Oahu hotels currently operating under the Outrigger brand will be relabeled with the OHANA brand effective December 19, 1999. OHANA Hotels of Hawaii is Waikiki�s largest hotel operator with nearly 5,000 guest rooms.
