HSMAI Awards Greater New York Chapter its 2010 “Chapter of the Year”
Award at its Annual Leadership Conference

MCLEAN, VA (Feb. 22, 2010) – The Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) awarded its highest award, “Chapter of the Year,” to the Greater New York chapter during its 2011 Leadership Conference annual awards banquet. The “Chapter of the Year” award honors a chapter that executed outstanding educational programming, applied a high standard of example-setting business acumen, and exceeded all HSMAI chapter success metrics. The Frank W. Berkman Chapter Awards Program presentation and the HSMAI Leadership Conference were held at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Feb. 7-9, 2011.

HSMAI presented 32 "Chapter Best of the Best Awards," recognizing the exceptional work and community contributions of 20 chapters across 12 categories. HSMAI received 104 entries from its 40 Americas Region chapters for the awards, which honor outstanding chapter achievements in hospitality marketing and sales, as well as industry best practices and innovation.

"It’s important to recognize industry thought leaders in the Americas Region chapters and the Frank W. Berkman awards presentation allows HSMAI to highlight those who continuously work to further our industry,” said Robert A. Gilbert, CHME, CHA, president and CEO of HSMAI. “The awards honor chapters that are committed to excellence in performance and innovation, and design creative programs that highlight best practices and cutting-edge sales, marketing, and revenue optimization strategies.”

Recognized Travel Leaders Offer Industry Insight

HSMAI’s Leadership Conference provides impactful, in-person professional growth opportunities that allow members to benefit from sharing ideas, learning from one another’s successes, and getting feedback on current industry challenges and trends. This year's Leadership Conference program included an array of speakers within the hospitality industry who spoke on empowering change throughout the industry.

Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, spoke about the industry coming together to deliver better travel results for America.

U.S. Travel Association President & CEO Roger Dow (right) took part in an interview with HSMAI President & CEO Bob Gilbert.

“Our industry is the front door to economic development, and our jobs cannot be exported,” said Dow. “Our industry is seen as frivolous by leaders. It is our challenge to change that perception. We need to light the fire within our teams and our industry leaders. Travel matters for productivity, health, relationships, and education.”

Roger Berry, former CIO of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, the Campbell Soup Company, and Tenneco Gas discussed managing transformational change through differentiating leadership.

“Differentiating leadership and innovation can create a cycle of continuous innovation,” said Berry. “Major opportunities for innovation and creativity occur at customer touch points.”

The HSMAI Leadership Conference was made possible with the support of American Express, Booking.com, STR, Palm Beach County Convention & Visitors Bureau, PGA National Resort & Spa, Southern Audio Visual, Ancomp, Southern Wine & Spirits of Florida, and HSMAI South Florida.
