Paul Handlery the 2003 Recipient of the Arthur Landstreet Award; Honored for Impact on  Education and
Training in the Hospitality Industry

 
Educational Institute Honors Leaders in Hospitality Training and Education 

ORLANDO, Fla., June 2003 - The Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association has announced this year's winners of its awards for champions of hospitality training and education. The following people and properties were honored Wednesday, June 18, during the Las Vegas International Hotel & Restaurant Show. 

Paul Handlery, CHA, is the 2003 recipient of the Arthur Landstreet Award.  Named after the Tennessee hotelier who founded the Educational Institute, the Arthur Landstreet award is presented to an individual who has made a lasting impact on the quality of education and training in the hospitality industry. 

Handlery, chairman and chief executive officer of Handlery Hotels, is a past president of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. He has served as president and honorary chairman for life of the American Hotel Foundation, ambassador and former trustee of the Educational Institute, past president and director emeritus of the California Hotel & Lodging Association; past president and president emeritus for life of the Hotel & Restaurant Foundation of San Francisco, and member of the Cornell Society of Hotelmen. 

EI presented four Lamp of Knowledge Awards this year. These awards are given to individuals and companies who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to advancing the quality of professionalism in the hospitality industry.  This year's honorees are: 

Outstanding Educator (International): Bruce Wyder, CHA, principal, Asia Pacific School of Hotel Management, Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. 

Outstanding Educator (Domestic): Kerry L. Sommerville, CHA, CHE, department chairman, Hotel/Restaurant, Sullivan University, Louisville, Ky. 

Outstanding Trainer: George Chen, CHA, CHT, owner, Comfort Suites Maingate Limited, Kissimmee, Fla. 

Outstanding Student: LingYun Guo, director of sales, Holiday Inn Crown Plaza, Xiamen, P.R. China. 

The Educational Institute also awarded Performance Plus Gold Achievement Awards to two properties that have raised their performance standards and demonstrated excellence in training and guest satisfaction using the Performance Plus Training and Development System.

Winning properties are: 

  • Navy Lodge-Norfolk, Norfolk, Va. 
  • Naval Station Mayport, Housing Department, Bachelor Housing Division, Mayport, Fla.
