 E. Ray Swan Selected the 2000 Recipient 
of the Arthur Landstreet Award
ORLANDO, Fla., April 2000�the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Motel Association has named this year�s winners of the �Celebration of Excellence� awards, presented during the AH&MA Spring Conference and Lodging Expo in Phoenix, April 12-14. 

E. Ray Swan, retired president/CEO of the Educational Institute, is the 2000 recipient of the Arthur Landstreet Award.  Named after the Tennessee hotelier who founded the Educational Institute, the Arthur Landstreet Award is presented to an individual whose industry leadership has significantly advanced the quality of hospitality education. 

Swan was selected for this distinction in recognition of his many years of service and dedication to the hospitality industry. In particular, he was honored for the tremendous growth of the Educational Institute during his years of leadership, from 1978 to 1995.

Jack J. Vaughn, CHA, chairman emeritus and senior advisor of the Opryland Hospitality Group, was awarded EI�s highest honor, CHA Emeritus, presented only to select Certified Hotel Administrators after a career of distinguished achievements.  

This award is bestowed only when EI�s Certification Commission and Board of Trustees finds a candidate who has shaped the industry through his or her contributions of experience, education, and leadership. 

EI President Anthony G. Marshall extolled Vaughn as �a magnificent man, extraordinary hotelier, and champion of the industry, as well as a faithful trustee of the Educational Institute. His astute guidance over many years is reflected in the Institute�s reputation for excellence.� 

EI presented three Lamp of Knowledge Awards this year.  These awards are given to individuals and companies whose dedication to hospitality education and training have risen to unexcelled levels. This year�s honorees are: 

Outstanding Educator: Ernest P. Boger, CHA, FMP, CHE, director of the hospitality management program at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Fla. 

Outstanding Student: Joseph O�Neill, general manager of the Wildhorse Casino Resort in Pendleton, Ore. 

Outstanding Trainer: Barbara Lucas, CHS, CRDE, front desk manager for the Seashore Inn, Coastal Systems Station in Panama City, Fla. 

The Educational Institute also awarded Performance Plus Gold Achievement Awards to five properties that have raised their performance standards through the Performance Plus Training and Development System.  Winning properties are: 

  • Navy Lodge Newport, Rhode Island 
  • Navy Lodge Gulfport, Mississippi
  • Holiday Inn Civic Center, McAllen, Texas 
  • COMFLEACT, Yokosuka, Japan
  • Seashore Inn, Panama City, Florida
