Sol Melia Hotels & Resort Expanding Gran Melia and
All-Inclusive Brand Properties in Mexico

-
ACAPULCO, Mexico (April 22, 2002) -- After opening its 11th hotel in Mexico in Puerto Morelos just four months ago and upgrading its Mexico City hotel to the luxury Gran Meliá brand at the same time, Spain-based Sol Meliá Hotels & Resorts, is continuing to ride a wave of success in Mexico.  During the 27th Annual Tianguis Turistico, Mexico's largest trade show and marketplace for wholesalers, tour operators and travel agents from 40 countries, Sol Meliá announced another Gran Meliá upgrade to the five-star Meliá Cancun Convention Center Beach & Spa Resort.  The upgrade will take place in fall 2002.

The company expects the same success they have had with the Mexico City Gran Meliá product in luxury accommodations, fine dining, high service levels and state-of-the-art convention center facilities to occur with the new Gran Meliá Cancun product.

"Our product diversity is a big key to our success, especially in Mexico," said Emanuel Schreibmaier, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Sol Meliá's Americas Division.  "We have also been getting rave reviews for

Meliá Cancun Convention Center Beach & Spa Resort
our Paradisus Riviera Cancun All-Suites All-Inclusive Beach & Spa Resort in Puerto Morelos, just outside of Cancun.  It has only been open a few months and the hotel has very high occupancy rates.  The United States Tour Operator Association (USTOA) Executive Retreat and the Celebrity Sports Invitational are both booked there for this October."

Schreibmaier said the success and demand for the Paradisus luxury all-inclusive brand has prompted the company to expand the product offering by converting a current five-star Meliá brand hotel in Costa Rica (the Meliá Playa Conchal All-Suite Beach & Golf Resort) to a Paradisus resort later this year.  Sol Meliá's signature Royal Service room category which is a standard option in all Gran Meliá brands, will also become a standard option in all Paradisus Resorts by 2003.  Royal Service features include private check-in, butler service, concierge service, an exclusive pillow menu, private breakfast and cocktail lounge, late check-out and more.

Travel agent response to Meliá, Gran Meliá and Paradisus product offerings continues to be very strong.   According to Schreibmaier, Sol Meliá has more than 33,000 travel agents in North America and Mexico who are members of the company's Club Amigos travel agent loyalty program and 25 percent of them book actively each month.  There are more than 60,000 Club Amigos members worldwide.

Sol Meliá Hotels & Resorts is one of the world's most successful hotel companies with its four brands Meliá Hotels, Tryp Hotels, Sol Hotels and Paradisus Resorts with over 350 hotels in more than 30 countries worldwide.
