in Hotel and Tourism Management

Hong Kong - October 17, 2001 - As part of its strategic vision to internationalize the university, the President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University is continuing the international postgraduate scholarship scheme started in 2000.

The scholarships are known as The Hong Kong Polytechnic University International Postgraduate Scholarships for PhD Studies.  They will be offered to full-time PhD applicants only.

The applicant should possess a first class honours degree or equivalent (GPA of 3.75 or above in the US system, or within the top 10% of graduates from elsewhere) from a reputable university.  Final year students are also eligible to apply and, if successful, will be given a conditional offer subject to their obtaining a first class honours degree or equivalent.

Selection Criteria

Selection is based on:
  •  past records of academic achievements;
  •  evidence of potential to excel in research degree studies;
  •  experience of international exposure and potential to contribute to the internationalization of the University;
  •  letter(s) of reference.

Each scholarship consists of between two and four years (depending on the academic qualifications and working experience of the student) of research studentship of HK$16,000 per month, associated money of HK$20,000 per normal study year, and waiving of the tuition fees for the normal period of study (US$1 = HK$7.78 as of Oct 2001).  The tuition fee will initially be waived for the first year.  For subsequent years, the tuition fee will be waived subject to satisfactory progress made by the student, as confirmed by the Departmental Research Committee. Successful applicants are expected to commence their studies around July 2002.

Successful applicants must have a valid student visa before they can begin studying in Hong Kong.  The University will sponsor the applicants, but not their dependents, to apply for a study visa.
