with Political Uncertainty |
Durham, N.H., Nov. 3, 2000 Softened by presidential political uncertainty,
the November Lodging Executives Sentiment Index (LESI) reads at 71.7 according
to the latest impressions of lodging executives about the level of business
activity for the lodging industry. This LESI reading for November is lower
by 7.1 index points than the 78.8 reading in October. A LESI reading of
50+ indicates that the lodging industry is generally expanding; and below
50, the industry is generally declining. The distance from 50 is indicative
of the strength of the expansion or decline.
The executives' sentiment about current business conditions decreased to 80.0 from Octobers reading of 88.5, though it still indicates expansion. Lodging activity is expanding with the present index showing some softening. Future components of the LESI indicate a trend of lower readings for two successive months. The Present Situation Index reads at 80.0 versus 88.5 in October and a 90.5 reading in September. The future Index for November also declined to 63.3 as compared to 69.2 for October and 73.8 for September. Construction of additional rooms for November is 83.3, somewhat lower than the expansion reported at 91.7 for October. The rooms reservation index declined to 63.3 for November than for Octobers 75.0 reading, and it has taken a precipitous drop from the 81.0 Index reading in September and the 81.6 reading in August. For the rooms reservation index executives were asked what they expected for rooms reservations/bookings over the next 12 months compared to the last 12 months. From a base line of 50, the distance continues to suggest expansion for lodging business activity for the future. Sixty seven (67%) percent of the lodging executives rated the current
business as good, compared to seventy seven (77%) for October and eighty
one (81%) for September. The November reading indicates that thirty three
(33%) percent expect the business activity to be about the same in the
next twelve months as against thirty eight (38%) percent for this same
reading for October. from our perspective, we are optimistic not only
of our business environment, but also with our outlook for performance
and growth, said a senior vice president of brand management from a well-known
lodging flag. LodgingForecast.com holds its executives responses in strictest
confidence; only the final summary analysis is reported, and that summary
analysis encompasses upwards of 1.5 million hotel rooms.
