The Rise of the Boutique Hotel and e-procurement Solutions Among Sessions at IH&RA Annual Congress
IH&RA Congress Programme
Paris, 26 October 2000 - When the International Hotel & Restaurant Associations 38th Annual Congress meets in London from 16-20 November 2000, it will offer lessons in leadership to hundreds of hotel and restaurant industry professionals from around the world.

Themed The Age of Excellence Dawns, the programme features over 50 high calibre presentations from speakers covering a wide range of major management issues - internet opportunities and risks, revenue management strategies, customer relationship management, crisis communications, attracting investment, managing change and creating a visioning organisation.

IH&RA president Osmane Aïdi will open the event on 17th November at the Hilton Metropole where Chris Smith, UK Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport is the VIP guest.

The Congress programme gets in top gear every morning with a keynote speaker. These include John McGrath, chairman of the Boots Company; Dan Larkin, European Leader of PricewaterhouseCoopers Hospitality & Leisure Financial Advisory on Saturday, and Ram Gidoomal, chairman of Winning Communications Partnership Ltd.

Eric Pfeffer, CEO of Cendant Corporation Hotel Division and past-president of the IH&RA , chairs the IH&RAs inaugural Hospitality Leaders Summit on Friday. The full-day event, sponsored by Dresdner, Kleinwort, Benson, is the first of what is planned to be an exclusive annual forum for ceos, chairmen & presidents of international hotel and restaurant chains.

The first day of the congress focuses on how the internet has transformed hotel distribution and how hoteliers can make sense of the multiple sales channel options now available. Peter Yesawich, CEO of Yesawich, Pepperdine & Brown, Chris Soder, president of the hotels division of Priceline.com and Mike Jones, Hilton Internationals VP distribution, consider the different strategy options facing hospitality managers.

Concurrent sessions will be e-ducational in every sense as IH&RA joins forces with the HSMAI to present a series of teach-ins covering the major web-based opportunities: business-to-employee, business-to-business and business-to-customer. Ken Hopper, Corporate Culture Promoter at Scandic Hotels will highlight an interactive induction programme designed to help new staff take on board the companys values and service credo. Hell be joined by Jane Neil, who will show how Whitbread has transformed its approach to learning for staff at all levels via the e-enablement of education, building a corporate learning hub, getting staff to own the learning process and explain the business benefits it delivers.

With e-procurement solutions able to slash up to 10% off the costs of purchasing non-production goods and services, meet the market makers who are involved and understand the B2B opportunities available. Alyson Dombey from Partners in Marketing chairs a discussion with Michael Madison, Forte Hotels E-commerce director, Anna Pollock, Managing Director, DestiCorp, and Toby Redshaw from Zoho.com.

The rise of the boutique hotel has been the hospitality industrys most successful consumer trend innovation to date. Underpinning it is the emotional connection established with customers says Andy Thrasyvoulou, MD of Myhotels who will show how he made it happen and highlight typical customer expectations in this segment. Hell join a debate moderated by Russell Kett, MD of HVS International, that pits niche newcomer Chip Conley, director of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, against the luxury-end market view represented by Michael Shepherd, GM of Londons Savoy Hotel.

Saturdays programme has a financial focus with sessions designed to appeal to every size of hospitality establishment including Growth strategies for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises; Competing with the Dot.coms, Valuing Hospitality Brands and Strategic Moves and the Cost of Capital. It will also feature sound advice on Controlling a Crisis by communications expert, Arch Lustberg.

In a challenging presentation on Sunday, Graham Senior, CEO of advertising agency Senior King will ask Is Travel Killing Tourism, arguing that the growth rate of leisure travel and tourism is unlikely to be seen again as the downside of a once-glamourous pastime starts to curb the travel spree of the 90s. Advice on how to increase market share and profitability in the face of ever-stronger competition via Human Marketing will be dispensed by marketing guru Donald Cooper.

On-site networking events include a get-together party sponsored by DiverseyLever, a cocktail party courtesy of Horwath International and a gala banquet hosted by American Express, plus lunches hosted by VingCard and Philip Morris. Other highlights include presentation of the IH&RAs annual Environmental Award, and its Young Hotelier of the World 2000, presented by HOTELS magazine.
