Old Vines Zinfandel? ... Knot!
Rodney Strong Vineyards Introduces

Knotty Vines Zinfandel
HEALDSBURG, Calif., Dec. 4, 2000 - Rodney Strong Vineyards has
elected to remove the term, Old Vines from its 1998 Estate Zinfandel and subsequent vintages, referring to it instead as Knotty Vines.  Although the wine, a blend of fruit from Russian River and Alexander Valleys, is still in a large part from old vines (sixty-plus years old), the blend now also includes fruit from younger vines.

Although there is no government regulation determining the usage of the term, Old Vines, Rodney Strong Vineyards wants to avoid misleading consumers into believing the wine is made entirely from vines of antiquity. Neither does the winery want their vines to be considered naughty by some future governmental decision on the appropriate age of vines used in the production of Zinfandels labeled Old Vines.

Knotty Vines is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to those Zinfandel producers who label wines, Old Vines, when Moderately Old Vines might be more appropriate!

Additional vineyard sources for Knotty Vines range from five to twenty-one year old vines. Rodney Strong Vineyards winemaker, Rick Sayre explains, The bottom line is that the addition of fruit from some of our exciting new vineyards adds character to the blend.

A large portion of the blend for the 1998 Knotty Vines Zinfandel includes fruit from the Winerys recently acquired Hubbard Ranch Vineyard in Sonoma Countys Alexander Valley.  Twenty-one-year-old vines growing there, produce a spicy, rich wine, dense in color and flavor and add great dimension to the Knotty Vines.

The term Knotty Vines does however pay tribute to the beauty of Californias historic Zinfandel vines.  We chose a name that describes the rugged and gnarled appearance of stately old vineyards, says winemaker Sayre.  He adds, The knots and twists in the trunk of the vine reflect over a century of winemaking in California.

Winemakers Notes

Formerly known as Old Vine Zinfandel, our Knotty Vines introduces the addition of fruit from twenty-one year old Zinfandel vines from our recently acquired Alexander Valley Hubbard Ranch vineyard. The 1998 Knotty Vines Zinfandel is a blend of fruit from young vines and seasoned old vines.

In the 1998 harvest we opted as often as we could to pick after the famous El Nino rains slowed and we had a shot at more seventy-degree days. As expected the additional days of warm temperatures added a much-anticipated depth of fruit from both the Hubbard Ranch and our Russian River Zinfandel vineyards.

The result is a radiant wine. The color, a deep red and violet rose, is matched only by a very perfumed nose. Intense aromas of raspberry-cream, strawberry and rose petal, mix with a delicate balance of the varietals typical pepper notes.

An abundance of bright fruit flavors of cranberry, raspberry and blackberry mingle to make the middle palate round and firm while a hint of white pepper and sage finish long on the palate.

A substantial meat dish like beef tenderloin with goat cheese and mustard sauce or a mix grill of Sonoma sausage will be a delicious match with the Knotty Vine.
