 Hotel Common Sense
Who Makes Resolutions Anymore?

By John Hogan, CHA MHS - December, 2000

 The things that hurt, instruct.
Benjamin Franklin

Over the years, in both a professional and personal situations, I have had the occasion to visit one of Americas finest old cities Philadelphia.  One cannot escape the impact Benjamin Franklin made on both the city and the country when one visits any of the citys many attractions.  We all know of Franklins famous experiments with electricity via a key and kite.  Many of us have first-hand experience with some of his inventions, such as the Franklin Stove or bi-focal glasses.  A visit to his adopted city also highlight many of his other innovations such as the first public free library, the first volunteer fire department, the University of Pennsylvania, the hospital system and more.

While Franklin is known to have had his  unsavory or bad habits, his reputation as a sage and wit remains well known through such publications as his POOR RICHARDS ALMANAC.

Planning and fortitude was the foundation of his successes, though and he based it on a commitment to list of what he called virtues.  Franklin identified 13 of these virtues and practiced or emphasized one each week, giving each a special focus four times a year.

Below are Franklins virtues listed in bold letters.  I have taken the liberty to update each of these in contemporary phrases in italics.  Some of his are awkward in language, but not in intent..

1. Temperance Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.
Self-explanatory
2. Silence Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation.
Be professional in what I say and do. ALWAYS.
3. Order Let all things have their places; let each part of your business have its time.
Remember the 80/20 rule. Establish and work on priorities!
4. Resolution Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve.
Say what I will do and then do it. ALWAYS!
5. Frugality Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e. waste  nothing.
Recycling is not just for others. It makes cents and sense.
There is always a better way.
6. Industry Lose not time; be always employd in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions.
Practice and master time management.  It makes a difference.
7. Sincerity Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and if you speak, speak accordingly.
If I speak the truth, I wont have to recall the story or half-truth.
8. Justice Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that you think they deserve.
Teamwork is always more successful in the long term. Practice it!
9. Moderation Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve.
Keep things in better perspective. Win the wars, not every skirmish.
10.  Cleanliness Tolerate no uncleanliness in body clothes or habitation.
Self-explanatory
11. Tranquility Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents, common or unavoidable.
Keep a balance in my personal life. Every one makes mistakes.
Every day!
12. Chastity Rarely use venery , but for health or offspring, never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or anothers peace or reputation.
Do not judge others. Be true to your own values.  ALWAYS!
13.  Humility Imitate Jesus and Socrates.
Everyone needs a hero, a mentor or someone to look up to. Remember there are others greater than and lesser than I. ALWAYS!

Who makes resolutions anymore?

Well, last year was an alright year, all things considered.  I think this year, Ill work on a stronger commitment to planning and consider the success record of our friend, Dr. Franklin.
