Number of Visitors to Tampa |
Tampa, FL -- May 10, 2000 - The last year
of the 20th century drew a record number of visitors to Tampa for vacation,
business and conventions or visits with friends and family. According to
the Visitor Impact Survey commissioned by the Tampa / Hillsborough Convention
and Visitors Association, more than 13.4 million visitors came to Tampa
in 1999, spending $2.23 billion. Most notably, cruise traffic grew 30.9%
last year.
In 1999, 416,824 passengers sailed into Tampa on a cruise, representing a 30.9% growth since 1998. Since 1991, the number of cruise passengers to Tampa has grown by 450%, making Tampa the fastest growing cruise port in North America. Passenger counts are expected to skyrocket to nearly 700,000 by the beginning of 2001 with the addition of Premier Cruise Lines to the line up of Carnival and Holland America ships that currently sail from Tampa.
Of the 13.4 million visitors, 7.55 million arrived through Tampa International Airport, the number one airport in America according to the Airline Passengers Association, a 10% increase from 1998. In addition, 4.4 million visitors stayed overnight using commercial lodging such as hotels, motels, condos and campgrounds representing an 8% growth. At a Glance
