 Utah Chevys Fresh Mex Manager Murdered 
in Restaurant Shooting Rampage
Chevys Sets Up Victims� Fund
SALT LAKE CITY, April 28, 2000 - Jason Rasmussen, 33, the manager of CHEVYS Fresh Mex Restaurant at 7475 South Union Park, in Sandy, Utah, died last night at the restaurant as a result of a fatal gunshot wound.  Rasmussen was shot to death by a man who walked into the restaurant about 9:00 p.m. MDT, demanding to use the telephone. According to police investigators, when Rasmussen directed the man to the restaurant payphone, the assailant pulled a handgun and shot Rasmussen in the chest. Jason Rasmussen died immediately at the scene.  Another Chevys employee, Josh Parker, 23, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and arm. Parker has worked as a server in the Sandy restaurant since December 1999. He is currently listed in stable condition at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

According to police reports, the gunman left the restaurant and then shot and killed another man who was in the restaurant parking lot. Police have identified the victim as Peter Berg.

Three more persons were shot and injured during the rampage last night at two neighboring business locations along South Union Park. The first shooting took place about 8:40 p.m. MDT at a hotel located just south of the restaurant.  The assailant�s rampage ended at a convenience store, just north of the restaurant where the assailant shot and injured a woman.

In a statement released from Chevys Corporate offices in Emeryville, CA, Chevys President and CEO Scott Berggren said, �This was not a robbery, but rather a random act of senseless violence. The incident had nothing to do with Chevys�we are the victims in this case. We are devastated by the loss of life of a member of the Chevys family, as well as our guest, and are grieving for all affected by the horrific crime.� Chevys management working in concert with the Salt Lake District Attorneys office has arranged for a crisis response team to work with Chevys employees and customers.

Later today, the District Attorneys office will announce where and when employees of the other two businesses, and customers can receive the same crisis counseling.
Jason was an excellent employee who began his career at the Salt Lake City Chevys as a server in December 1999, and was promoted to manager of the Sandy restaurant two and a half months ago. He was a resident of Salt Lake City, Utah. He is survived by his parents Don and Yvonne Rasmussen, of Rexburg, Idaho.  �Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jason�s family, and all the victims and victim�s families at this sad and terrible time,� said Stan Knoles, owner/franchisee of Chevys Fresh Mex Restaurants of Utah. He also said, �Our concerns are also with our customers who witnessed this tragedy. We are doing everything humanly possible to offer help to all of those in need.�

Knoles went on to say, �We�re overwhelmed and grateful on this difficult day for the support and prayers of this great community.�

Sandy police arrested a suspect late this morning less than a mile from the crime scene. Police have identified the suspect as 21-year-old Robert Martinez. According to police, Martinez was hiding at the home of friends and surrendered to police after a short negotiation. Martinez is in custody at the Salt Lake County Jail.
