UNLV / Strictly Slots Survey Reveals Preferences
of Americas Slot Players
LAS VEGAS, June 16, 2000 - A survey released last week by Casino Journal Publishing Group at the UNLVs Casino Ops 2000 revealed the favorite games, playing habits and budgets of Americas slot players.

Since it began publishing Strictly Slots magazine in 1998, Casino Journal Publishing Group has been receiving informal information on the preferences of slot players.

Last year, Strictly Slots editors decided to formalize some of the information they were receiving and asked for help from the International Gaming Institute at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.  Under the direction of Professor John Bowen, the director of graduate studies for UNLVs William F. Harrah School of Hotel Administration, a survey was established.  In the January 2000 issue of Strictly Slots, readers were asked to state their gaming preferences.

Just some of the Strictly Slots/UNLV Slot Survey
results found that:
  • The slot players favorite games are Double Diamonds, and varieties of this game such as Double Diamond Deluxe, followed by Red White and Blue and Triple Diamond, all manufactured by IGT.
  • Traditional reel spinning slot machines are the preferred type of game, with 75 percent of those responding also playing bonus games.
  • Eighty percent of the players providing answers mentioned they play multi-line machines.
  • Ninety percent of the players play progressives, but most players spend 10 percent or less of their total playing time on progressive machines.
  • The majority of respondents also played video poker (56.5 percent).
  • The favorite video poker game is Deuces Wild.
  • The reasons casino customers played slot machines were excitement, the chance to become wealthy, entertainment, they are easy to play, offer an affordable minimum bet, and the chance to win money.
  • Almost all of those responding use a slot club (98 percent).
  • Regarding frequency of play, the players are divided into three equally sized groups with 1/3 playing 6 times a year or less, 1/3 playing 7-12 times per year and 1/3 playing more than 12 times per year.

  • The most popular gaming choices in order of number of responses are the Las Vegas Strip, Atlantic City, Mississippi, Downtown Las Vegas, Connecticut and Louisiana.

The Strictly Slots/UNLV Slot Survey was released at this weeks UNLVs
Casino Ops 2000 educational gaming conference, held at The Regent Las Vegas.

UNLVs Casino Ops is the industrys most comprehensive education program for gaming executives looking to advance their career and features cutting-edge seminars with expert speakers explaining the intricacies of their particular subjects.  This year, more than 500 executives from casinos and businesses in 22 states and as far away as Japan and South Korea attended UNLVs Casino Ops.  There is no gaming conference that combines the specialties of the two producers of Casino Ops, the educational excellence of UNLVs International Gaming Institute and the extensive gaming publications of Casino Journal Publishing Group.

The producers of UNLVs Casino Ops are some of the most influential groups in the gaming industry.  UNLVs International Gaming Institute at the William F. Harrah School of Hotel Administration is one of the primary sources of gaming education in the U.S. and internationally.  The Institute provides degree programs for its students, and advises many other educational institutions on setting up programs serving the gaming industry.  In addition to UNLVs Casino Ops, the Institute produces many events throughout the year for executives, academics and regulators.

Casino Journal Publishing Group, Inc. is the largest publisher of gaming information, including the industry trade magazine, Casino Journal; the gaming industrys weekly newsletter, National Gaming Summary; four financial newsletters, the Gaming Industry Daily Report, the Gaming Industry Weekly Report and the Daily Lodging Report North America and the Daily Lodging Report Asia-Pacific; and the nations largest consumer gaming publications, Casino Player and Strictly Slots.
