Jay S. Witzel Resigns as President and COO 
at Extended Stay America, Inc
 
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Oct. 20, 1999 - Extended Stay America, Inc. (NYSE: ESA) announced today that Jay S. Witzel has resigned his position as President and Chief Operating Officer of ESA Management, Inc. to pursue other interests.

Prior to joining the Company in August 1997, Mr. Witzel served as President of Radisson Hospitality Worldwide, Minneapolis, MN. Mr. Witzel expects to make an announcement regarding his future plans within several weeks. 

Mr. George D. Johnson, Jr., Chief Executive Officer of the Company, stated: �Jay has made significant contributions to our Company during his tenure, a period that saw the Company experience historic growth and become the fastest-growing owned and operated hotel Company in American history. His expertise as a world class hotelier touched every area of our operation and has positioned us well for the aggressive growth we continue to envision for our future. Jay is a consummate gentleman and he will be missed as both a co-worker and friend. We all wish him well.�

Mr. Johnson said that he will immediately assume all of Mr. Witzel�s responsibilities and that no replacement is contemplated.
