545-room Outrigger Waikoloa Beach Opens Following $25.5 Million Transformation

WAIKOLOA, HAWAII, November 1999 -  Outrigger Hotels & Resorts opened the brand new Outrigger Waikoloa Beach on October 15, 1999, following a four-month, $25.5 million redevelopment of the hotel that included all public areas, pool, guest rooms, meetings facilities and back-of-house areas. The resort, which is located beachfront on Anaehoomalu Bay, along the island of Hawaiis exclusive Kohala Coast, now offers a dramatic new look and substantially upgraded facilities and services.

According to general manager Robin Graf, the hotel is a wonderful addition to Hawaiis selection of fine resorts. Were so proud of our new hotel, Graf said. The Outrigger Waikoloa Beach can now take its place among the finest resort hotels in the Islands. Its also a prime example of Outriggers new emphasis of moving in the direction of upscale, full-service properties in key resort destinations.

In addition to its upgraded appearance, the former Royal Waikoloan hotel is welcoming guests with a new commitment to service and style. At the porte cochere, cool sandstone flooring gives way to off-white walls with rounded soffits, inset with golden brown coconut wood accents. The lobby is bright and airy, cooled by the trade winds, with a view of the Pacific Ocean visible through the lobby.

Within the lobby, a dramatic 40-foot mural dominates one wall. Painted by renowned island artist-historian, Herb Kane, the mural depicts Captain George Vancouvers ship, Discovery, being escorted into Anaehoomalu Bay by a Hawaiian chiefs double-hulled canoe. Appropriately situated in front of the mural is the hotels 109-year-old Hawaiian outrigger canoe, Kaimalino.

Guest rooms and suites at the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach have been completely restored, with rattan furnishings and carpets in shades of taupe and teal. Lamps with bamboo bases, shell shaped walls sconces and a custom-designed bed coverlet that incorporates island motifs of petroglyphs, palms, tiki torches, fish and shells introduce a whimsical art-deco aspect to guest rooms. Pictures of outrigger canoes and petroglyph prints by Island artists serve as attractive reminders of Hawaiis unique culture. All rooms feature air conditioning, Yukata robes, a coffee maker, private lanai, granite vanity, refrigerator, iron and ironing board and in-room safe.

Hawaii Calls Restaurant is the hotels featured dining room. Named after the famous Trans-Pacific radio broadcast of the 1930s and 40s, the restaurants decor is a nostalgic reminder of an earlier era when Matson oceanliners brought visitors to Hawaiis shores.

Gracing the walls are prints and posters reminiscent of the well-known Matson menu covers that today are sought-after collectors items. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Hawaii Calls Restaurant offers a menu of island flavors utilizing some of the islands freshest products. In addition to the feast of flavors offered by executive sous chef Abdul Chadli, patrons are treated to a feast for the eyes with many tables offering views of the hotels lush landscaping, themed pool and the blue Pacific in the distance.

Adjacent to Hawaii Calls Restaurant is the Clipper Lounge, where guests can enjoy tropical drinks and appetizers, as well as live entertainment nightly. Poolside is Nalus Bar and Grill, offering a variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, tropical drinks and afternoon entertainment.

The Outrigger Waikoloa Beach is ideally suited for meetings and incentive programs. The hotels Alii, Paniolo and Lehua ballrooms offer more than 14,500 square feet of indoor meeting and function space, in addition to beautiful beachfront reception areas with spectacular views.
With the reopening of the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach, an island tradition has returned to the Waikoloa Beach Resort. Every Sunday and Wednesday evening, the hotel presents its Royal Luau (5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.), an exciting Polynesian feast and show. As the sun sets, torches are lit on the hotels historic grounds while guests sample local delicacies such as lomi lomi salmon, kalua pig, mahi, mahi, a complete salad bar and an extensive array of desserts.

The Outrigger Waikoloa Beach sits on one of the areas most beautiful golden sand beaches on the edge of Anaehoomalu Bay. The water is perfect for snorkeling, swimming, surfing, kayaking, windsurfing or a catamaran ride.  All these activities can be arranged through the hotels beach services hut. There are also six plexipave tennis courts at the resort with a resident tennis pro. Individual instruction, round robins and ball machine practice can be arranged as well as racquet rentals. For golf enthusiasts, the Waikoloa Beach Resort is home to two 18-hole championship golf courses, where guests of the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach can play. Complimentary shuttle service and bag store are available to guests. Tee times can be made a year in advance.

A fitness facility is scheduled to open by December 15 for those guests looking to continue their regular workouts while on vacation. Guests wanting to pamper their bodies will enjoy the Hawaiian Rainforest Salon & Spa, also scheduled to open by December 15. A full array of spa products, body wraps, massages, facials and salon services will be available, including the traditional art of lomi lomi (Hawaiian-style massage).

Additional hotel services and amenities available at the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach include a themed pool with water slide and childrens pool, on-property laundry facility, same day laundry and valet service, business center, Hawaiian cultural program, room service, concierge service, Lamonts gift shop and the soon-to-open Kona Blue Sky Coffee Bar. A childrens program is scheduled to come on line by years end.

Outriggers signature Voyagers Club level of service will be available by mid-December at the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach and includes some of the hotels best guest rooms, a private lounge, complimentary continental breakfast and evening snacks, as well as the personalized services of a Voyagers Club Host.

The Outrigger Waikoloa Beach is owned and operated by Outrigger Hotels & Resorts, a division of Hawaii-based Outrigger Enterprises, Inc., the largest lodging company in Hawaii and one of the fastest growing lodging companies in the Pacific.
