Awards $80,500 in Scholarships to Hotel and Restaurant Students |
San Francisco, CA, Sept. 12, 2003 Robert Wilhelm, President of the
Hotel & Restaurant Foundation, announced that 57 students would receive
$80,500 in scholarships this year. The students from colleges and universities
throughout California were introduced to donors and industry members at
the Foundations 55th Annual Awards Luncheon on September 12th at the Hilton
San Francisco. Hank Biddle, Market Vice President, Western Region, Marriott
International, gave the keynote address at the luncheon.
The Hilda Watson Gifford Scholarship, named in honor of the founder of the City College of San Francisco Hotel & Restaurant program and the Foundation, is given each year to the outstanding applicant. This year the scholarship was given to Margaret Lyeth, a hospitality management and finance major at the University of San Francisco. Hospitality management and culinary arts students from City College of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, University of San Francisco, Santa Barbara City College and Cal Poly at Pomona received scholarships of between $500 and $5,000. The Hotel & Restaurant Foundation was founded in 1948 to provide financial support through scholarship grants to qualified students enrolled in academic programs for hospitality industry careers. It also provides financial support to the Alice Statler Library (www.ccsf.edu/Library/alice/statler.html), a library devoted exclusively to the hotel, restaurant and food service industries, located at City College of San Francisco Mission Statement The Hotel & Restaurant Foundation exists to raise money within the hospitality industry to promote and support hospitality management and culinary arts education through the granting of scholarships and funds for program enrichment. Being San Francisco based, the Foundation historically supports the degree granting hospitality management and culinary arts programs at colleges and universities in San Francisco. However, many donors restrict their gifts to scholarships for students with specific career aspirations or attending other programs in California. In its scholarship granting, the Foundation endeavors to identify and reward the best and brightest students with hospitality industry work experience. Scholarships totaling $125,000 and $102,700 were awarded in school years 2001-02 and 2002-03, respectively. In school year 2003-04, fifty-six students will receive $80,500 in scholarships.
