Daniel M. Tabas, Hotelier, Dies at 80; Developed
the Downingtown Inn Golf & Tennis Resort
and Mickey Rooney's Tabas Hotel

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 16, 2003 - Daniel M. Tabas, a business entrepreneur with a long list of accomplishments, passed away Friday, September 12, 2003. His funeral at the Temple Adath Israel in Merion, PA was attended by over 1,200 mourners and the procession of cars stretched over 2 miles. His burial was in a private mausoleum at Mr. Tabas' home in Haverford.

He was born and raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey on August 15, 1923, and moved to Philadelphia in 1935 at the age of 13 with his late father, Samuel and brother Charles. His mother, Esther passed away when he was about two years old. His sister Francis Pearl Tabas, who for a short time raised him like a mother, died at age 13. After completion of schooling in the Philadelphia Public School System, Bucknell University, and time served with the U.S. Army Air Corps, he subsequently (during the period from 1945 to 1960) participated with his father and late brother, Charles, in the management and operation of the ACORN IRON & SUPPLY CO. of Philadelphia (the family business founded by his late father). One of the investments made by the Tabas Enterprises was the purchase of some 100 acres of land in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Plans for a restaurant were finalized for this tract and soon after its opening, twelve (12) rooms were added; from that evolved the famous DOWNINGTOWN INN GOLF & TENNIS RESORT which ultimately encompassed 300 acres, 500 guest rooms, a PGA-accredited golf course, indoor ice rink, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a sports complex and the first area dinner theatre. In the early 70s, Tabas Enterprises pooled interests with those of Ramada Inns, Inc. who actively took over the operation of the Downingtown Inn Golf & Tennis Resort and Daniel Tabas remained there for several years as President Emeritus.

In 1975, Daniel Tabas left the Downingtown Inn complex for new business ventures. He had already established the Exton Industrial and Downingtown Industrial Parks, which attracted first rate companies to the Downingtown area including Pepperidge Farm Bakery, Downingtown Farmer's Market, Downingtown Motor Inn, Beloit Corporation, Pillsbury Mills, FMC, Clary Multiplier, Subsidiary of Phillip Morris Tobacco, Foamade Industries, Burroughs/Unisys, Bowling Palace, Blackhawk Apartments, Blackhawk Convenience Center, Downingtown Mickey Rooney's Tabas Hotel, Pritikin Center, and D'Ambrosio Dodge. With the influx of these and other well-known companies and industry to the Downingtown area, many jobs were created which greatly helped the local economy and employment situation. In latter 1975, Daniel Tabas established and opened the RIVERFRONT RESTAURANT and the RIVERFRONT DINNER THEATRE at Poplar Street and the Delaware River in Philadelphia. To that facility was added the ADMIRAL'S CLUB, a private gourmet dining facility within the Riverfront Complex. Following the success of the RIVERFRONT COMPLEX, Dan Tabas purchased a former Ford Car Agency Showroom on City Line Avenue at Belmont Drive, Philadelphia, which later transformed into the CITY LINE DINNER THEATRE which featured well-known entertainers such as Cesar Romero, Joe Namath, Terry Moore Hughes, Lilia Skala and many others. It was from this facility that Mr. Tabas fired entertainer Zsa Zsa Gabor because of her unpleasant behavior toward handicapped persons in the audience. Unknowns who went on to greater show business successes include Andrea McArdle who starred in the Broadway production of "Annie" as well as the former "Saturday Night Live", TV personality, Joe Piscopo.

In early 1980, plans were finalized and construction began on MICKEY ROONEY'S TABAS HOTEL, an elegant new hotel in Downingtown, PA -- located directly across the road from his former DOWNINGTOWN INN GOLF & TENNIS RESORT.  Mickey 's association with Dan Tabas in the new hotel grew into a long friendship. The resort contained 300-plus guest rooms, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, gourmet restaurant, marina, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, Mickey Rooney's Starlight Night Club, a cocktail lounge, large banquet and meeting rooms, plus a variety of other facilities available to patrons and opened for business in March, 1981.

Other Tabas enterprises included THE BOWLING PALACE, a 40-lane facility adjacent to Mickey Rooney's Tabas Hotel; the CONVENIENCE CENTER OFFICE COMPLEX on Route 30 in Downingtown, as well as many real estate investments. Due to the acquisition of various real estate interests over the past several years, the Tabases -- via their FAMILY PARTNERS enterprise -- now own and operate approximately 1000 residential apartments in and around Philadelphia.  Mr. Tabas also owns and operates the 4-story ROYAL PLAZA OFFICE BUILDING in Narberth, PA where he maintained his offices.

In 1980, Daniel M. Tabas acquired controlling interest in the former Bank of King of Prussia, which was renamed ROYAL BANK OF PENNSYLVANIA. Under the Tabas family tutelage, this bank's assets and offices have increased from an initial capital of $11 million to over $1 billion and now a total of nineteen (19) offices which include a headquarters office in Narberth, PA, Royal Bank of America in Cherry Hill, NJ and Royal Bancshares in Wilmington, DE.

Daniel Tabas and Evelyn Rome Tabas have been married for the past 54 years and are the parents of six (6) children. Lee Evan, Linda Jane, JoAnn, Carol Lynn, Robert Royal and Susan Kimberly. Nineteen (19) grandchildren -- four are children of Lee and Nancy Jo Tabas -- Samuel Bradford, Elizabeth Rebecca, Theodore Hershel and Melissa Tamara. Adam Todd, Jessica Erin and Alexander Cody are the children of Linda Tabas Stempel and Murray Stempel, III. Jake Michael, Chelsea Arielle and Brittany Morgan are the children of Jo Ann Tabas Wurzak and Howard J. Wurzak. Chet Adam, Lily Ashley, Gregory Rome and Maxwell Hunter are the children of Carol Lynn Tabas and Dr. Guy M. Stofman. Jason Bryan and Stephanie Pearl are the children of Robert Royal Tabas and Dr.  Janine Tabas. Fitz Daniel Tabas Tepper, Major Corl Tabas Tepper and Dagny Kent Tabas Tepper are the children of Susan Tabas Tepper and Kenneth L. Tepper.

Dan Tabas, despite his non-stop schedule, always had the time to support worthy groups and organizations. In fact, he has long said -- "If you want something done, give it to a busy person!"  He was a past director of both Industrial Valley Bank and the Industrial Valley Title Insurance Company. He served as Chairman of the Board, and as director of the Royal Bank of Pennsylvania. Last, but not least are his many philanthropic pursuits. He has given generous financial support, not only as an individual, but also as a founder, trustee and chairman of the Samuel Tabas Family Foundation, as well as the Daniel M. Tabas Family Foundation, to many worthy organizations and charities. These foundations are worldwide trusts established exclusively for charitable, religious, scientific and educational purposes.

The philosophy of Mr. Daniel Tabas concurs with that of his late friend, the Honorable Walter H. Annenberg, former Ambassador to England, prominent businessman, art collector and connoisseur ...  "It has been said that service to others should be in keeping with our own good fortune in life."
