 Penn State Hotel School Scholars, Steven J. Morgan and
Christopher M. Schubert, Receive Scholarships of
Excellence from the Statler Foundation for 2003-04

University Park, Pa - August 5, 2003 - Two students enrolled in the hotel, restaurant and institutional management (HRIM) program at Penn State -- Steven J. Morgan and Christopher M. Schubert -- have received Statler Foundation Scholarships of Excellence for 2003-04 as the result of their academic excellence and their extracurricular involvement.
        
�We are grateful to the Statler Foundation for its generous investment in the education of the future leaders of the hospitality industry,� says Dr. Sara C. Parks, director of the Penn State School of Hotel, Restaurant and Recreation Management.  �Messrs. Morgan and Schubert both possess the outstanding academic skills and leadership qualities the Foundation seeks in its scholarship recipients.�
        
The Statler Foundation was created from the estate of hotelier Ellsworth M. Statler following his death in 1928.  The purpose of the foundation is to support research work for the benefit of the hotel industry and to train and �[make] more proficient the workers in the hotels for the benefit of the industry as a whole.�  The Scholarship of Excellence, which is awarded to outstanding undergraduate students planning to pursue careers in the industry, provides up to $20,000 per academic year to cover each recipient�s tuition, fees, books and room and board.
        
Morgan, a senior enrolled in the HRIM program, currently maintains a 3.90 GPA.  A 2000 graduate of York Suburban (Pa.) High School, he is the son of Deborah S. Morgan and John D. Morgan, both of York.
        
In addition to the Statler Foundation Scholarship, Morgan has received the Latif and Martha Thomas Scholarship, the Class of 1922 Scholarship and the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Foundation Scholarship.  He has been inducted into the Eta Sigma Delta and Phi Upsilon Omicron honor societies.
        
Morgan is secretary of the Penn State Hotel and Restaurant Society and a member of the Club Manager�s Association of America.  He also has served as the student general manager for the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Recreation Management�s annual �Celebrity Chef� dinner, and he has worked for Toftrees Resort, The Atherton Hotel and Centre Hills Country Club in State College.
        
After graduation, Morgan hopes to pursue a career in hotel operations, preferably in finance and/or revenue management.
        
Schubert, a junior enrolled in the HRIM program, currently maintains a 3.85 grade point average.  A 2001 graduate of Susquehanna Township (Pa.) High School, he is the son of Michael and Janie Schubert of Harrisburg.
        
Schubert, a Schreyer Scholar, is president-elect of the Penn State Hotel and Restaurant Society, past vice president of the Penn State Hotel Sales and Marketing Club and chair of the Penn State chapter of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality�s liaison committee.  He also is a member of the College of Health and Human Development Diversity Committee, the Recreation and Park Management Student Society and the Penn State Dance Marathon Morale Committee, and he has been involved with Perspective Mic and Project Haiti.
        
Schubert has received several awards, including the Robert S. Jones (Philadelphia Airport Marriott) Scholarship, the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation High School Senior Scholarship, the Susquehanna Township Lions Club Scholarship, the Thomas J. Carr Citizenship Scholarship and the Sheetz, Inc. Total Customer Focus Award.  He has served internships at the Hershey (Pa.) Lodge and Convention Center and Chautaqua (N.Y.)
