Jack Shaffer, Hotel Deal Maker and Former Managing
Director of Sonnenblick-Goldman, Dies at Age 73

New York, NY - August 21, 2003 � Jack A. Shaffer, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2003.  Jack Shaffer was one of the industry�s most loved �deal makers� and known throughout the world not only for his charisma, charm and wit but also for his ability to interact with and unite a variety of investment personalities - allowing him to orchestrate some of the industry�s most complicated and successful deals. 

In his honor, the Jack A. Shaffer Scholarship Foundation has been established at St. Thomas Acquinas School, 1909 Daly Avenue, The Bronx, New York.

Having over 45 years of experience in real estate and hotel investments, Mr. Shaffer specialized in hotel transactions with domestic and foreign investors and institutions.  Throughout his career, he had completed more that $30 billion in real estate transactions including the $860 million Savoy Group acquisition by the Blackstone Group; the Marriott acquisition of the Ritz Carlton Hotel chain; the $1.5 billion Aoki and Bass acquisition of Westin Hotels; and the Starwood purchase of CIGA Hotels Europe from ITT Sheraton. 

Jack Shaffer started his real estate career by founding the Chicago-based mortgage banking firm, Dwinn-Shaffer.  From Dwinn-Shaffer, he moved to San Francisco to open Sonnenblick-Goldman Company�s San Francisco office.  Mr. Shaffer eventually relocated to Sonnenblick-Goldman�s New York headquarters where he served as Principal and Managing Director for over 30 years.  Mr. Shaffer most recently served as Chairman of Jack A. Shaffer & Company, a boutique real estate investment advisory and principal firm, which he established in 2000. 

Mr. Shaffer has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including honors from UJA and St. Thomas Acquinas School.  He held a Juris Doctorate degree from Northwestern University, School of Law and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Miami.  He was a Governor and Trustee of the Urban Land Institute, a member of the Board of Trustees for Lexington Corporate Properties Trust and a past member of the Board of Directors of Guinness Peat Properties Inc.
