The Gran Meliá Fénix, Acquired by Sol Meliá for
43 million Euros, Reopens after Renovation
April, 2002 - A new star is on the scene in Madrid in the shape of a newly-renovated and reopened Gran Meliá Fénix. Located in the very center of the Spanish capital city, in the well-known Plaza de Colón, the hotel was acquired in the year 2000 by the Spanish hotel company Sol Meliá for 43 million Euros as part of the deal to take over the Tryp Hotel chain. The hotel has now been reopened after a 12.5 million Euro renovation. According to the Vice Chairman of Sol Meliá, Sebastián Escarrer, we are very proud to be able to provide Madrid with its first really Spanish deluxe hotel, as well as providing Sol Meliá with the truly flagship property that it needed in the capital, a hotel which after its renovation is destined to become one of the most emblematic properties the country offers anywhere in the world.

Gran Meliá Fénix: a hotel with a grand history

The new facilities at the Gran Meliá Fénix have managed to recover their former splendor and restore the hotel to its rightful place in the history of Madrid. Inaugurated in 1953 with the assistance of the actor Gregory Peck, what was then known as the Hotel of the Nobility was also visited in the same year by the actresses Gloria Swanson and Rita Hayworth, amongst many other celebrities. It was in 1965 when the Beatles decided to hold one of the most well-attended press conferences ever seen in the capital in the hotel while also taking four luxury suites. Since then, the hotel became the scene of many illustrious events and personalities in the history of Madrid. Today, the thorough renovation of the new Sol Meliá flagship hotel in Madrid has made the Gran Meliá Fénix the hotel of choice for the 21st. century.

The renovation has affected all of the hotels guestrooms and public areas. 217 rooms all fitted with the exquisite details expected of a deluxe hotel, and designed to cater to the needs of the most discerning travelers to Madrid.

The new decoration of the Gran Meliá Fénix reflects all of the elegance of classical English styles in the heart of Madrid, on the Paseo de la Castellana. The Wax Museum, the De la Villa Cultural Center, the National Library and Archeological Museum are just some of the closest attractions to be seen on foot from the hotel. A magnificent location for a luxury hotel, known for many a year as the location for some of the finest evening meetings at the Cafeteria del Fénix and in the Salón de las 4 Estaciones (Four Seasons Lounge), now both fully renovated.

A great destination for leisure travelers that has also been adapted to host a wide range of different types of professional meetings and events. 5 meeting rooms, all fitted with the most advanced technologies, guarantee the success of all events, together with a Buffet Restaurant providing classical cuisine set up to host midday meetings as well as an intimate à la carte restaurant, the Bendinat, for lunches and dinners.
