Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference, June 16-19, 2002,
Gives Priority to New Issues

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (April 9, 2002) The Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) recently publicized the preliminary program for its annual Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC), themed Winning in a Changing Marketplace.  The sessions will address important topics, such as short term and long term Industry Outlook, the New North American Market, Public Relations in Good Times and Bad, Hotel Cost Management and Control, a New Approach to Caribbean Tourism Management and Marketing, and Niche Marketing.  We felt it was important to give priority to the issues that have gained particular relevance in light of the changed climate of the hospitality industry since last year, said John Bell, director general and CEO of CHA.  In addition, CHIC features two additions to its program:  a Small Hotels Track and a Caribbean Hotels Showcase for Travel Agents.  CHIC 2002 will take place June 16-19, 2002 at the Wyndham El Conquistador Resort & Country Club in Puerto
Rico.

Small Hotels Track:

CHIC 2002 incorporates the former CHA Small Hotels Retreat and its agenda to present the most business and learning environment possible for Caribbean small hoteliers.  The small hotels track features daily working breakfast sessions targeted to small hoteliers, as preludes to specific panel discussions, Develop a Hard-Hitting Marketing Plan and Pricing your Hotels Room Rates.

In addition, the traditional Travel Industry Exchanges will include topics specifically selected and developed for small hotels, such as Effective F&B Operations for Small Hotels, Decorating with More Sense than Dollars, How to Compete with the Big Boys, Intra-Island Packaging, and Find the Funds!, among many others.  These exchanges will follow the popular format of dialogue and debate among hoteliers that has been featured successfully at the CHA Small Hotels Retreat over the years.

Caribbean Hotels Showcase for Travel Agents:

CHIC 2002 will feature the opportunity for hoteliers to promote their properties to travel agents who have been invited to join us and explore the Caribbean one tabletop at a time.  In a showcase environment, hoteliers will be able to display promotional material; conduct business one-on-one; and make new contacts in the travel industry at no extra cost.

Participation in the Showcase is included in the CHIC 2002 registration fee.  The only requirement is that hotels pre-register in advance.  Since space is limited, pre-registration to the Showcase will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Conference Favorites:  CHIC 2002 will also present the annual American Express Awards Luncheon, which honors the Stars of the Caribbean Hospitality Industry
2002:  Employee of the Year, Supervisor of the Year, Green Hotel and Green Area of the Year, and Hotel Association Executives of the Year.

Other CHIC 2002 favorites are the Live and Silent Auctions and the Golf Tournament for the benefit of the Caribbean Hotel Foundation Scholarship Fund, and the Closing Gala Banquet with the coveted Hotelier of the Year award.
