New Mexico Hotelier Katherine Slick Joins
Steering Committee for Business Enterprises
for Sustainable Travel

NEW YORK, October 18, 2001 -  Michael Seltzer, the Director of Business Enterprises for Sustainable Travel, today announced that Katherine Slick, an expert on historic preservation, has joined BEST's steering committee. An initiative of The Conference Board in association with the World Travel & Tourism Council, BEST is a leading source of knowledge on innovative travel practices that advance the interests of businesses, travelers and destination communities.

Katherine Slick is currently Trustee at Large for the United States Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites and is one of four citizens of the general public appointed by President Bill Clinton to serve on the Advisory Council for Historic Preservation, for which she is still a citizen member. Slick is also the President of the New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance and, for the past five years, has served as the Chair of the Architectural Committee for the "Save the Castle" campaign at the United World College of America West in Montezuma, New Mexico. In addition to these positions, Slick is also a partner of the Historic Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Previously, she was an advisor and Trustee for the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Seltzer commented, "Katherine Slick's experience and deep commitment to preservation, conservation and revitalization in New Mexico, makes her ideally suited to serve on BEST's steering committee. Because BEST focuses on travel and tourism practices that protect and preserve destinations, we are confident that Ms. Slick's expertise will significantly enhance our initiatives."

Plaza Hotel
Las Vegas, New Mexico
In 1982 eighteen partners joined in the Plaza Partnership, Ltd. to rehabilitate the Plaza Hotel, which had fallen into a state of neglect. Careful research, architectural documentation and historical / cultural studies were conducted to assure the accuracy of the rehabilitation project. The reconstruction took thirteen months and approximately two million dollars to complete. The rehabilitated Plaza Hotel reopened on December 31, 1982.

Today, the Plaza Hotel is listed on the State Register of Cultural Properties and is part of the Las Vegas  Plaza Historical District. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 1882, local residents, tourists, architects, historians and film makers have continued to be fascinated by the glimpse of Old West elegance this stately structure affords. The Plaza Hotel is proud of its role as an accessible landmark of Las Vegas and New Mexico history.

Slick noted, "I am eager to work on BEST's projects to encourage sustainable practices - those that protect the local people, their culture and the natural environment. I look forward to working with the other steering committee members in promoting sustainable practices that emphasize the balance between tourism and the well-being of destination communities."

In addition to Slick, BEST's steering committee includes executives from the following companies and organizations:  the American Express Company, Marriott International, Inc., Lindblad Expeditions, The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF), the United Nations, the Western American Indian Chamber, George Washington University, the United States Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites, National Geographic Traveler Magazine, The Philanthropic Collaborative, The Conference Board and the World Travel & Tourism Council.

Business Enterprises for Sustainable Travel (BEST) is the first industry-specific initiative undertaken by The Conference Board in its 84-year history.
