AH&LA Meets Second-Year
Americas Promise Goal

NEW YORK, November 2001 - Twenty-five member state associations of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) recently joined the associations industry-wide commitment to Americas Promise-The Alliance for Youth.

These new AH&LA Hotels of Promise members fulfills the associations second-year goal of enrolling 40 member state associations.

Participating in this national, philanthropic organization founded by Ret. General Colin Powell demonstrates AH&LA members commitment to supporting and improving the lives of youth in their communities. To assist them in this process, they must adopt at least one of the organizations Five Promises, including (1) ongoing relationships with caring adults, (2) safe places with structured activities during non-school hours, (3) a healthy start and future, (4) marketable skills through effective education, and (5) an opportunity give back through community service.

In the aftermath of September 11, we are devoted to continuing our humanitarian efforts to help heal our nation.

This positive commitment to U.S. youth will not only be an enjoyable experience, but a small step to ensuring the successful future of our country as well as the lodging industry, said AH&LA President and CEO Joseph A. McInerney, CHA.

As part of its Americas Promise pledge, AH&LA is participating in the 2002 National Groundhog Job Shadow Day program for the fourth consecutive year. AH&LA and its members will support this one-day (February 1, 2002) national, mentoring initiative to introduce young people to the world of work through hands-on learning experiences - hoteliers invite high school students to shadow them as they go through a typical workday.

In November 1999, AH&LA made a three-year pledge to Americas Promise - The Alliance for Youth to commit 1,500 hotels and 15 AH&LA member state associations in 165 cities, reaching one million children in 2000. The following year AH&LA will increased its involvement to 4,500 hotels and 40 member state associations in 410 cities, and 2.5 million children. By 2002, all of AH&LAs 52 members are expected to join this effort and will have
impacted the lives of 4.5 million children in 1,000 cities from coast to coast.
